CRYSTALS OF THE MONTE BIANCO (The Crystal Hunters First Part)

 

Franco Lucianaz was born in Aosta February the 16th, 1941 and he lives in fraction Valpettaz (Charvensod). Ex Regional dependent USL of the Aosta Valley, ski monitor and president of the Aosta Valley Mineralogical group "Les Amis di Berrio" (from 1995). Because of his long and proven career of mineralogist (cristallier or researcher of champions of crystals) he is defined by now in the local environment a "legend." In fact, Franco begins to collect minerals in the '70ies, enrolling himself in the mineralogical group of the Cral Cogne with the President Giulio Albertinelli (it must not be forgotten that the first collector of minerals of Aosta Valley, at least in the modern period, was a Sicilian: the barber who worked then in Saint-Pierre, Nazzareno Fiocca). Nevertheless, and as he likes to remember, Franco passion for the stones starts when "hobby" is a really abstruse word in the families of farmers-workers; but, since he is a little boy, he knows how to pick minerals up with love for beauty, while he is running after the herd on the high pastures of the mountains of Rhêmes. During those eight seasons of hard life, it's difficult to appreciate the environment among downpours, uneasiness and storms. The only certainty of that apprenticeship is that he goes out of it tempered. Nevertheless, thanks to his job, he becomes a great expert of the the most hidden ravines of the region, and this enables him and other companions or colleagues to discover hidden particulars such as, for instance, garnets and the famous vesuvians of the rodingitis (green ophites stones), said the most beautiful of the world.

 

 

 

Roberto (christian name, but called Camillo in his first youth) Ferronato is born in Aosta, February the 7th, 1953 and he lives in the Fraction of Plan Félinaz (municipality of Charvensod at the foot of the Becca di Nona) or, as it was called by the inhabitants of the first Fifties when the country was born in a golena of expansion of the stream Dora Baltea, "Pian of Felina", the ancient "Fenina" meaning a place for the pasture of the "feyes" or goats. Even if he will have a different destiny he too has to work all the same for six seasons as a young sheperd at the Little Saint Bernard, to help his family in the difficult moment after the second war.

 

 

 

 

After that there's the even harder period as a hodman in a building yard helping the jobbers of the plaster (currently because of this profession he's a retired artisan). Despite this hard job, he doesn't disdain sport devoting himself, not to deny himself, to a hard and fatiguing sport as the lifting of weight. In 1971, under the programs of his trainer Pietro Creux said "Pierino", he goes to Catania where he conquers a bronze medal at the Students National Championships of weight lifting in the Category Medium. In the meantime, since, as he usually says, "a chance in life is not denied even to a dog", he's initiated into mountaineering by the already more experienced fellow-townsman Osvaldo Cardellina; he will succeed in measuring himself on the great regional mountains and they'll open together different new routes, most of them in the Emilius Mountain range, overhanging their village and placed among the Central Valley of the Dora Baltea and the neighbouring ones of Cogne, Grand Brissogne and Saint-Marcel. This association, lasted for over ten years, will diminish from winter 1981/82, when Roberto, who had started in the meantime with bob-sleigh, wins another bronze medal at the Italian Championships of 4 people team bob-sleigh, while his companion of rope has taken already in hand the fates of the Aosta Kick 1911 as trainer of the first team: a little progressive removal from the common passion, as it often happens in life. In 1982 starts the diversification of affairs, even if they will realise other nostalgic ascents, but desultorily.   In the meantime the two future cristalliers of Mount Blanc meet. For duty of chronicle, Franco during the previous autumn had led Roberto along the basin of the Glacier of Miage to publicize an idea and to convince him to this philosophy of the search of crystals; in this particular environment, even if their approach to mountains is different, they both will have great satisfactions. This way, the two start the Company, taken by a passion that in time will become sacred fury. Going in quota to the Glacier of Pré de Bar, they find in alternate phases on a sub-vertical vein their first minerals in a crack: cubic fluorites (bi-coloured) combined with hyaline quartzes and sporadic galena, this one also crystallized cubic. These champions are still the only ones found in the massif of Mount Blanc. Obviously their joy is great, but from the beginning they realize that the most important thing is to use the common sense: above all, to be good seekers, they have to know thoroughly the ground, so unpredictable, incoherent, difficult, sometimes impenetrable and rather dangerous with which they will measure their strength. They'll have to stop for a long time under slopes, sues in their job, feeling, every time, that the world collapses on their head, since they have created dangerous empty spaces. They are anxious to disclose the secrets still hidden by rocks and ice, even if Monte Bianco had been scouted and explored since immemorial time. In short Roby says: "the cristalliers will always be misunderstood and of doubtful ethical fame, accused to empty the mountains removing their soul and, by some pedantic ones, to lower the quotas (sic!). But, after all, if a divine hand created the sought-after minerals of the alpine cracks (according to the last scientific data, about twenty million of years ago, in the last phase of the orogenesis) it is unthinkable that He had selfishly wanted to leave in dark hollows these perfect geometric figures of shining light and rich of fascinating mystery." In 1983, they assiduously go to the basin of Fréboudze or Fréboudges (first "fumés" - brown - quartzes of a certain merit) in Val Ferret, and to Piccolo Monte Bianco in Val Vény (roses of hematite, brookiti), reaching the foot of the Innominata, beyond the mountaineering hut Monzino, running after the fabulous anatasis, (octahedrites or dioxide of titanium) that an inhabitant of Biella had discovered there, it will be known after, at the Aiguille Jean-Joseph Croux. In 1984, it's mountain hut Gonella turn. Too many Italian collectors, starting from the cristallier from Milan Walter Monistier, had found in this immense stone glacier, besides the numerous other mineralogical kinds, splendid zeolites, as well as quartzes with inclusion of bissolite etc. Nothing: even if Roberto and Franco looking for them arrive at the Aiguilles Grises, they come back without any crystal in their backpack; the times were not yet mature. Just the case to say it. It takes a lot of patience in running after them. (In the meantime with a regurgitation of passion for mountaineering that he feels sometimes, that year in July, Roberto is again on Mount Emilius with Osvaldo, in the repetition of their "direct" way of 1980 on the North face, opening a new itinerary slightly different and more direct to the peak together with Alex "Lupetto" Casalegno and of Maurice Castellan). But let's talk about 1985, since for their training of cristalliers the basin of Triolet is important. In fact Roberto ascends with Osvaldo, in one day, the Aiguille de Talèfre from Arnouva through the East Crest (Emile Rey's Route, Roberto does it, but he sees nothing: he's too busy to dig as a mole along those 700 meters; at midday his companion has to call him to make him realize that he had reached the top); the mountain is still very snowy, but in spite of this they understand that it's rich of diaclase (veins of quartzite). Thus, from now on, they begin to board it with a lot of raids in many campaigns. Nevertheless, we have to consider that, in this zone, as in other ones of the massif where geodynamics has been intense, the cristalliers coming from Courmayeur and Chamonix through Pierre Joseph col have always exported from the cracks a great amount of material. So only thanks to summer heat that had reduced some hanging snowfields, our two friends can find some unexplored cracks. Anyhow, in 1986, (year of the bicentennial of the first ascent to Mount Blanc; note that in 1787 the second ascent was performed by three cristalliers from Chamonix to prepare the scientific one of de Saussure), Roberto, in a solitary turn on the East face of the Aiguille of Estellette, discovers by chance an important site. Climbing subsequently with his companion Franco, who has a flair and is able in using sledge-hammer, to their great surprise, they find a fantastic, amazing lithoclase with hyaline quartzes (with "faden" crystals, i.e., with a core). It will become source of champions for many, many years to come. This way in 1988, at the end of August, with the aspirant guide Stephen Grivel from Gressan (the only survivor with Hans Marguerettaz in 1985 of Lyskamm tragedy) they sprightly return to the superior branch of the Glacier of Triolet and from there toward the Plateau Méridional. That summer is torrid and obviously the permafrost is not much consistent in a gully of the South-East slope of Talèfre, where they must go. They avoid a first discharge of ice above the Goedecke Route (III°+), while more aloft on the couloir Roberto comes surprised from blocks suddenly detached from the superior hanging snowfield and his companions think he's done for. Then, at the return it will be him to help Stephen, slipped on the rocky plates remaining crushed with the whole load and turned to belly down toward the terminal crevasse, totally immobilized and with the rope as tense as a violin one. But all's well that ends well. "A morbid hunger of quartzes, as if it were a beautiful woman ready to make love", Roberto affirms with emotion. Nevertheless, in spite of ice and rocks avoided for a wonder, the cristalliers, that day, come downhill after midnight, each of them with a load of more than 40 kilos of collecting minerals and with other misadventures that could have changed their joy in tragedy. Few days later, out of mind and tireless, Franco and Roberto return on the same itinerary to recover other fumés quartzes of an oven that seemed inexhaustible; luckily everything stays calm, imperturbable, not even the whistle of a stone. It's sure that the mountain has offered them and in various phases of its geological transformation, a rare scheelite (tungstato of Wolframio and kick), numerous gwindel or helical quartzes very appreciated by collectors, and a big quartz of about 15 kilos, that will be given to the Regional Museum of Natural Sciences of Saint-Pierre.

 

 

1989 is the keystone for the two "adventurers" from Charvensod, who prove their sure abilities in facing every kind of situation; from this moment on the young mountain climber Hans Marguerettaz from Courmayeur joins them forming so a formidable team operating in the Southern sector of the Massif. Hans, moreover, endowed with an endless curriculum of exploits, with exceptional routes in solitary among ypercouloir, supercouloir, connections etc. delays the passage to guide, because of an accident in paraglide: with that ephemeral gadget he hedges hop the granite rocks and, therefore, a gust dashes him against the wall. Maddish. But by now he starts recovering and he's anxious to be in good form to begin a serious collection of minerals. On the other hand, he'll give the material of the big oven, found by him on the South-East face of the Aiguilles Marbrées, to the Regional Museum, adding those lacking pieces to its mineralogical section, as its President perfectly knows. He will still find other notable specimen, as for instance, a red centimetric octahedral fluorite in the morion quartzes of the Aiguille de Toula. Since the first exits everything is fantastic for those three vagabonds, looked at with amazement and suspicion when they are in the cable-car, grungy, gross, tired and folded up on the backpacks, almost always swollen to their limit. "Actually, besides the alpine equipment, the cristallier has to bring a whole series of deadly iron excavation scrap; this already slashes him thin from the departure, at dawn; much more when the fate rewards him with the due load of recoveries. After all it's really the physical difficulty that countersigns him from an elegant mountain climber, as Roby says:" beh to the most, "peones!." Nevertheless, apart from people's opinions, this expedition is unforgettable for them because of the good reasons above mentioned; unity is strenght in labouring and suffering. And here they are down in the territories preferred by Hans, under the Turin Old Hut in the so-called "great couloir of the latrine": a notorious place with frequent "traps" and such as to bewilder even the coral caws when the dust rises. But here, at the extreme limit of an irreducible snowfield, quartzes fumés of rare beauty and worthy to make part of any world collection emerge from that unstable granite; and also other minerals such as the roses of hematite, the calcite and the ones of the rare earths: the monazite and the allanite inside small quartzes that's very hard to see in the clay or in the chlorite. Then it's the turn of the Marbrées, the Giant Pass, the Grand Flambeau, the Aiguille d'Entrèves and so on, up to the Mont Noir du Peutérey (pirite of rare symmetry and hyaline quartzes with epitassia of the siderite). They perform also a descent from the Petit Mont Blanc directly on the Miage glacier and moraine following the traces of the chamoises in free climbing descent (cubic pyrites with quartz and titaniti with adularia), on a layout that, in mountain language, is perhaps a first run. Again on the Talèfre (pink octagonal fluorites with quartzes fumés; these pieces also will go to the Museum, lacking in this precious pyramidal mineral). Once more to the Estellette, where Hans lowers Roberto from a wall higher than 70 meters, carrying a great slab of about 65 kilos on the back and fearing that the rope, rather thin due to the excessive load, can break. He still wonders why he suffers from an awful ache of back. But he's satisfied and aware that his boulder will be given to the Museum. In 1990 the team is at work under the Monts Rouges du Peutérey (tabular hyalines quartzes geminate with cerussite); then to the Pic de la Brenva (faden fumés quartzes and green octahedral fluorite). Hans becomes alpine guide and glider pilot. Afterwards, in 1991 the gang reaches the "gum" of the Giant Tooth, where Franco waits for them anxiously, since his companions go down on the precipice (Périades); having overcome the superior shoulder (East) they move to the North slope and, with a short crossing, they stop on the North-East edge to a draught of rope from the peak. Here Hans, the dangling legs, works with the crowbar and the hook in the crystallized hollow (morion quartzes among which an amazing sample higher than 40 cm with cluster quartzes). They heap up the backpacks and, having recovered the loot, they come back with a series of double ropes that they have to equip little by little, seeing the void below that goes down for 800 meters. These are exciting descents such to cut the breath in all the meanings, because of the load, obviously. Then in team, they face in different trips one of the wildest places of the massif: the peak Yeld, the glacier of the Périades on the North-North-West wall of the Jag, where certain "dalles" or plates are stuck with the spit. Terrible environment and very infrequent human passages since the times of the Zimmer caravan in 1900. Finally on September the 7th 1991, with his group scattered on the Aiguille de Talèfre, Roberto, positioned on a steep suggestive frozen slant of the variation of Luigi Carrel (East Slope), is victim of a terrible accident but happily with a happy end. To avoid a rock overhanging him, he falls down along a colander for tens of meters, halting thanks to a granite protuberance that saves his life. He will get by, (nearly bared) with the fracture of his left foot malleolus and with superficial excoriations in the whole body. This will teach him to put on his crampons, to hold an ice-axe in his hand, to wear the crash-helmet, even if it cooks the brain (I couldn't be worse, he says) and to face adventures with a minimum of safety, knowing the danger. But we're not sure that he always respects these basic rules. Nevertheless in 1992, after having forgotten his fears, he's with Hans at Col Savoie (gwindel and hyalines quartzes). Going down together from the "brêche" of the Monts Rouges de Triolet, zigzaging on the glacier, they stop on the borders of a rocky islet towards Peak Isabella. Hans starts lowering Franco on the opposite side and, on a prominence at 30 meters from the underlying glacier, their companion makes an exceptional discovery on an almost vertical and saturated of soil crack. In fact, he extracts a champion with two light green crystallines above pyramidal, one of which a centimetre. When they are all three on that slender prominence, there and then, though admiring its beauty, they understand almost nothing about the nature or the kind of what they had found. (* It was a mineral of the rare earths: the Kainosite, unique for Mont Blanc and then contended by different alpine Museums). After, they are left by the helicopter in the depression between the Mont Greuvettaz and the Aiguille de Leschaux, in consequence of the interest of Mr. Noussan. They camp out up there trying to recover some material and they do the same near the bivouac of the Brenva. In the meantime Hans, as well struck by the virus of mineralogy, has desired for a long time to organize in his country the first "Show Market" of minerals and fossils, and this will happen at Christmas. In 1993, above a variation of Hans (dihedral of 40 meters beside the 1975 Route Goedecke) of the South-East Crest of the Talèfre, Franco, Roberto and Giorgio Lale Murix from Saint-Pierre working on an archaic oven can extract some plates stuffed with adamant quartzes of around 35 kilos each. They will be shown, together with old books about this subject, at the second exhibition that Hans organizes for the last week of August. Afterwards, Franco, Giorgio and Dario Vighetti from Aosta break down another diaphragm on the litoclase of the Estellette, finding marvellous champions with a faden of 27 centimetres. At the end of September, Hans and Roberto, from the Pass Supérieur de Savoie, search on the South-South-West edge of the Aiguille. About this route it has come to our knowledge that there had been only a roped party in descent; none on the climb.

 

 

And here we are in 1994: it is worthy of note to remember the two days of the end of July that Roberto spends with Hans at the Dent de Jétoula. Here in fact after a descent of 60 meters on the slope Rochefort, where his companion, in a precedent solitary turn, had found many gwindel morions and almost all in matrix, Roberto restless can't help admiring not only the impregnability of the suspended oven in the abyss, but, even more, the inexpressible cleverness and courage of his friend, gifted besides of extraordinary humility. After a camping out in the open, the day after they lower flanking the South Crest (Via Gigi Panei), but without any result, till the base of Mont Fréty glacier. Then, reaching the hut of Pavillon, Hans communicates him the possibility to expose their champions along the course of the cable-way, having got in practice the ok from the Count Titta Gilberti. He fears nevertheless a sabotage of the third exhibition of minerals, already scheduled, since he has had a hard contrast with the mayor because of political matters concerning the valleys Vény and Ferret, etc. "The syndic, short after, probably angry, takes the necessary steps to prepare the decree that will forbid picking minerals on the territory of Mount Blanc", they explain (* * More or less this already happened at Bellecombe and Banchette in the municipalities of Chatillon and Montjovet, where he had been to take information). On August 14 Hans is again with Roberto on the terrace of Punta Helbronner: their intention is to reach the Jag of the Giant, but a snowfall in quota diverts them down toward the Vierge. Insofar they lower themselves along the Northern Spur of the Petit Flambeau finding, almost near its base and on a small terrace, unusual hyalines quartzes higher than 20 cm with laumontite. They are very happy! As usually in these cases they embrace each other, unaware that unfortunately this will be ineluctably the last hug and the last appointment of Hans with the mountain. Then, happy, they minutely wrap the best pieces, leaving other ones in sight of a possible return and they go up again along the snowy crest, shaped as a scimitar (also this route has probably never been done before), reaching shortly the cable-car. The following day, Hans participates in the party of the guides and, on 21, been fond of free flight, while coming back with his glider from Ayas Valley, he tragically breaks on the southern heap of stones (non ho trovato il tuo nome groundstone: sai tu che esiste e che significa pietraia?) of Mount Tantané (La Magdeleine). He was only 30 and it is always difficult to understand and to accept this tragedy; he was a true professional in every field. There is no doubt that mineralogy in Aosta Valley and the small town of Courmayeur greatly felt his death; especially the cristalliers, who well know that the time lost is lost forever. "Crystals are a spark of purity", said the guide/cristallier Georges Bettembourg and he added: "It's abnormal to spend a life in mountain without seeing crystals." Hans' friends Walter and André Grivel will organize the show market, that unfortunately will stop existing in 1996. Meanwhile in 1995, there is a great cultural show at Saint-Bénin Centre, in Aosta: "Les Dents de la Terre" (The earth teeth), supported by the Aosta Valley Region, with the participation of the mineralogical group "Les Amis di Berrio." The same group will collaborate also with the French collector Dr. Eric Asselborn for his "Minéralogie de Chamonix." Afterwards, in 1996, Franco and Roberto helped by the geologist Paolo Castello, project their slides "The cristalliers talk about themselves" at the "Jardin de l'Ange" in Courmayeur, place allowed by Franco's friend Henry Truchet. In the meantime there is an intense work for the imminent opening of the "Museum of the Crystals", under the terrace of the glaciers of Pointe Helbronner, and Massimo Rey want them to fill a first showcase. Therefore they return to the Vierge to recover the quartzes left in '94, in order to put them with other ones in the museum adding also some pictures of their search. In September 1997 they open the highest exhibition of crystals in Europe, dedicated to Hans, supported by the Region and strongly wanted by the Society owning the cable-cars, to realize the wish of the Count Titta Gilberti (died some years before) to offer something more to the guests reaching Punta Helbronner. Well, the room is divided into sections: the alpine pieces of the Museum of Mineralogy in Turin (presided by the geologist George Peyronel) and the ones from the massif of Mount Blanc found by the two cristalliers from Charvensod who, the following year, will fill the empty spaces. On October 3, Roberto with the guide from Courmayeur (ex-cristallier) Mario Mochet, faces in one day the impervious spur of the miners at East of Col Infranchissable, and they return to lake Combal with a first photographic documentation both of the course and of the inside of the cavern (things never seen before), disclosing definitively the nature of the argentine mineral: id est that the galena gangue was not hydrofluoric, as asserted in 1963 in the guide C.A.I./T.C.I. by the geologist Ercole Martina getting many consents, but simply of zinc blend (sulphide of zinc). Yet it would have been enough to consult the 1864 Felice Giordano relationship: look at "Rivista Mineralogica Italiana", 1999; "Minaria Helvetica", 1999; the catalogue "Cristalli e Minerali in Valle d'Aosta", 2004; Minerals of Piedmont and of Aosta's Valley, 2007 and the catalogue "Mineralientage", Munich 2010. In 1998, in consequence of a disastrous detaching of a pillar on the South-East Crest, the Talèfre offers (a chi??)? Andrea Borney from Aymavilles other pink octahedral fluorites with the fumés quartzes, quite different from the striking French red ones. In 1999, they make a first important discovery of stilbiti, quartzes and other zeolites as laumontite, heulandite and cabasite on the walls above the Dôme glacier, not far from the Shelter Gonella, and they find, around the slopes, considerable green quartzes of bissolite. Here they meet the keeper and friend Alessio Ollier, one of the best guides of the sixties / seventies, also good cristallier, hunter with his brother Attilio, and precursor of the alpine help.

 

In 2000, on the occasion of the 150° anniversary of the foundation of the Guides of Courmayeur, Franco and Roberto are invited to their party, at the feast of the Assumption; they bring a quartz to be shown and then they give it to the president of Italy Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, on holiday there. During the summer Franco, together with the young Luca Mochet, finds, at the right place and at the right moment, an exponential oven grazing the ice on the South-West slope of the Aiguilles Marbrées: it's difficult to quantify the content of that layer, but certainly the fumés are valuable; they find also several epidotes and adamant gwindel. The 15 October 2001 Franco goes through the most dramatic moment of his life, because he wants to put again his hand in the hole at the Marbrées, even though he knows that that site has become a trench, as in "The battle of the Ardennes." However, Roberto accompanies him and they are quickly there, through the glacier of the Giant; even if there's nothing left and in spite of the abundant snowfalls, they don't come back, but they decide to climb the slant as if it were just a walk. Roberto, in fact, takes advantage on being on the ridge to climb the Peak Payot; they are always untied and everyone for himself, as usually while searching, knowing that place stone by stone. During the descent on the opposite slope, i.e. along the crest going to the Col of Rochefort, with mist and a frozen north wind (enough to make an Eskimo shudder with cold), Franco, a meter far from his companion, suddenly falls inside a gully luckily full of snow (after a violent fall from around 3 meters on the rocks) where he rolls down for many tens of meters. Hard to believe if you know the zone, he doesn't knock against the sharp rocks, but he halts in that narrow passage sinking on a providential subsidence, while his backpack disappears in the underlying glacier. Roberto's anguish and terror finish only when he can see his brotherly friend's conditions. Franco gets away with 9 fractured ribs and various lesions. Have they paid the right tribute to Mount Blanc for having raided it of so many treasures? And still thanking the gods who hadn't been so angry after all. In 2003, after the campaigns with some friends from Turin and its environs to the Alp of the Frasses in the hessonite garnets concession in Valley of Susa, Roberto is invited to expose some select pieces at the "Fondation Tissières" in Martigny together with Valais cristalliers. In the meantime Franco, president of the association, obtains from the President of the junta Roberto Louvin a special licence to carry away, in collaboration with the Regional Museum, the splendid vesuvianes from the wall of Banchette. After all, on the matter permits, the President Dino Viérin had always granted the licence, "understanding with foresight that not all are criminals destroying stones and awaking devils, but that there are collectors who, if they can, keep the minerals popularizing science and culture, without noise and commerce", affirm our friends. In fact Roberto and Franco's pieces are exhibited from South to North of the Dora Baltea river; it's hard to find other people doing that, but Les Amis di Berrio are few and, so, politically they don't count. Therefore on the Banchette (Rodo), the guide Aldo Cambiolo from Valpelline puts in safety the unusual yard. In summer, they'll come with him to the place of the super spherical and pearly stilbitis and at last, after many days of inhuman excavation at more than 3000 meters above sea level, they are gratified by a crystallized cove sunk on itself for more than three meters between the ice and inactive material of that metamorphic rock: it will result that they are the most beautiful pieces of the Alps, besides the already quoted numerous accessory minerals. Also the Museum helps them and, with the corps of foresters, it grants them a flight in helicopter to bring down the remaining material, including a plate of over 70 kilos that will go to Saint-Pierre museum (* * * now closed for restoration, where we hope the minerals will be put in a suitable place inside the castle, and no more near the toilets!). It would take a too long time to talk about all the other discoveries of our two crazy boys and it could maybe be boring. So let's go on with the most important events of their long career. Actually, in 2004, there is the second exhibition for Roberto at Martigny; in June, for the Mineralogical Group, the exhibition "Crystals and Minerals in Aosta Valley" at the Archaeological Museum of Aosta, thanks to the assessor for culture Teresa Charles. On Aug 21, to commemorate the decennial of their friend Hans death, they organize a projection of slides at the Jardin de l'Ange (the third one). And, on the occasion of the last visit of Pope John Paul II to Introd, they're asked for a quartz crystal (symbol of purity and of the inaccessibility of mountains), to give Him. (Did He know who were the donors, just to put a good word for Heaven?) In 2005, Franco is interviewed by the guides Hervé Barmasse and Pietro Giglio, for the telecast "Here Mountains" (regional italian TV). The third exhibition at Martigny is about Sempione tunnel; Franco aware of its importance participates complying with the Swiss collector Alexander Saltzman wishes. In 2006, the Region asks them to prepare a showcase of minerals for the Museum of the Alps, inside the fortress of Bard, where they show a notable druse of quartzes fumés from Marbrées in the space devoted to the great John Ruskin. At the beginning of March, since the exhibition at the Archaeological Museum had been an international success, Franco and Roberto are invited to expose their best pieces, from the Southern sector of the massif, at the "Mineral Show" of Bologna about Mount Blanc. The season finishes with the invitation, from the "Club de Minéralogie" of Chamonix, at the inauguration of their magnificent Museum. In 2007, they're invited to the guides day at Courmayeur, for having inserted, together with other cristalliers, minerals and, most of all, a hyaline quartz of Hans weighing 6 kilos found at the Eagle Beak (the only piece that his widow Joanne Grey had given to Pointe Helbronner museum) and some photos, immortalizing him in search. Intelligent exposure organized by Luciano Maregliati, Pierino Rey and Luca Mochet. In August 2009, for the 42nd "Exposition Bourse internationale Chamonix Mont-Blanc", they prepare two showcases with the collections of their best pieces; French thank them for their regular presence at the meeting of the end of the year to hear the news but, most of all, they want to honour and show the minerals of the other side, nearly always ignored. In 2011, Region asks them to lend two big free quartzes that, with Grivel ice-axes, will reach Rome for the 150th Anniversary of the unity of Italy and that are supposed to have gone even to Washington. For the opening at the Regional Library of Chatrian exhibition ("The art of a goldsmith in Aosta Valley"), besides the native gold from the mine of Brusson, they prepare different cubes with many crystals of quartz in the most varied forms and colours. Recently, because of the dismantlement of Punta Helbronner to realize the new cable-car, helped by the staff, they have to empty, dismount and reassemble the showcases, in a room granted by Roberto Francesconi at the Pavillon du Mont-Fréty; after 14 years and innumerable visitors, they will be shown here waiting for a better and larger space. Franco Lucianaz è nato ad Aosta il 16 febbraio del 1941 e risiede in frazione Valpettaz (Charvensod); è un ex dipendente regionale USL della Valle d'Aosta, maestro di sci e presidente del Gruppo Mineralogico Valdostano "Les Amis di Berrio" (dal 1995). Per la sua lunga e comprovata carriera di mineralogista (cristallier o ricercatore di campioni di cristalli) è definito ormai nell'ambiente locale una "leggenda". Infatti, Franco inizia a collezionare minerali a partire dagli anni 70, iscrivendosi al Gruppo Mineralogico del CRAL Cogne con l'allora presidente Giulio Albertinelli. (Non va dimenticato che il primo collezionista di minerali valdostano, almeno in era moderna, era un meridionale siciliano o calabrese, e il barbiere che, in quegli anni, operava a St. Pierre: Nazzareno Fiocca). Tuttavia, e come piace a lui rammentare, il "virus" vero e proprio per la passione dei sassi, Franco lo prende in un periodo in cui hobby era una parola davvero astrusa nelle famiglie contadino-operaie; ma lui, in cuor suo, fin da fanciullo, sapeva raccattarli qua e là nutrendo quel gusto del bello, seppure intento a rincorrere la mandria sugli alti pascoli delle montagne di Rhêmes. In quelle otto stagioni di dura vita, che dovette affrontare, era difficile poter amare l'ambiente circostante, tra acquazzoni, disagi e bufere. L'unica certezza di quel tirocinio è che ne è uscito senz'altro temprato. Ciò nonostante, grazie al suo lavoro, è diventato in seguito un profondo conoscitore degli anfratti più celati del territorio valdostano, il che gli ha permesso, insieme ad altri compagni o colleghi, di scovare quei particolari nascosti, come ad esempio i granati e le famose vesuviane delle rodingiti (pietre verdi ofiolitiche), definite le più belle del mondo.

Roberto (nome di battesimo, ma conosciuto in paese nella prima giovinezza come Camillo) Ferronato nasce ad Aosta, il 7 febbraio del 1953 e risiede nel comune di Charvensod, ai piedi della Becca di Nona, più precisamente nella frazione di Plan Félinaz o meglio, come volevano gli abitanti dei primi anni Cinquanta allorché nacque il paese in una golena di espansione del fiume Dora Baltea, Pian di Felina, Fenina nella cartografia antica, ossia località atta al pascolo delle sole "feyes" o capre. Anche se il suo destino sarà diverso, pure a lui "toccano", suo malgrado, sei stagioni da pastorello al Piccolo San Bernardo, a causa del difficile contesto familiare e sociale del primo dopoguerra. Dopodiché c'è stato l'incubo ancor più nero del cantiere edile con l'impegno di servire come manovale i cottimisti dell'intonaco (attualmente tramite questa professione risulta artigiano in pensione). Nonostante questo duro impegno lavorativo, non disdegna lo sport dedicandosi, tanto per non smentirsi, ad una disciplina dura e faticosa come il sollevamento pesi o pesistica. Nel 1971, sotto i programmi del suo Allenatore Pietro Creux detto "Pierino", lo vediamo impegnato a Catania dove conquista una medaglia di bronzo ai Campionati Nazionali Allievi di sollevamento pesi nella categoria Medi. Nel frattempo, anche perché dice lui: "una chance nella vita non la si nega neppure ad un cane", viene iniziato all'alpinismo dal già più esperto compaesano Osvaldo Cardellina; riuscirà a misurarsi sulle grandi montagne nostrane e insieme apriranno diverse vie nuove, soprattutto nel gruppo del Monte Emilius, sovrastante l'abitato e sito tra la Valle Centrale della Dora e quelle limitrofe di Cogne, Grand Brissogne e Saint Marcel. Questo sodalizio, durato per oltre due lustri, sarebbe poi via via scemato a partire dall'inverno del 1981/82, quando a Cervinia Roberto, nel frattempo avviatosi alla disciplina del bob, si conquista un altro bronzo ai Campionati Italiani di bob a quattro, mentre il suo compagno di cordata ha già preso in mano le sorti dell'Aosta Calcio 1911, come Allenatore della Prima Squadra. Un piccolo progressivo allontanamente dagli interessi comuni, come spesso vuole la vita... Il 1982 segna la stagione di una diversificazione d'interessi, anche se, seppure più saltuariamente, seguiranno altre salite che riviste a posteriori divengono "nostalgiche". Nel frattempo avviene l'incontro dei due futuri cristalliers del Monte Bianco. Per dover di cronaca, Franco già durante l'autunno precedente aveva condotto Roberto lungo il bacino del Glacier du Miage per propagandare un'idea e convincerlo a questa filosofia della ricerca dei cristalli; in questo particolare ambiente, questa modalità di approccio, seppure diversificato nell'affrontare le montagne, ma di sapore antico come le medesime, poteva offrire ad entrambi grandi soddisfazioni. Così i due iniziano la Company, fin da subito presi da una passione che nel tempo diventerà sacro furore. Portandosi in quota sul Ghiacciaio del Pré de Bar(d?), trovano a alternativamente su di una vena sub-verticale i loro primi minerali in fessura: fluoriti cubiche (bicolore) associate ai quarzi ialini con sporadica galena, anch'essa cristallizzata cubica. Questi campioni rimangono peraltro gli unici esemplari che tuttora si conoscano, trovati sul Massiccio del Bianco. La gioia ovviamente è stata grande, ma sin da quelle prime sortite i due si sono resi conto che ciò che più conta è usare il raziocinio, consapevoli che non ci si può improvvisare cercatori senza conoscere a fondo il terreno, così imprevedibile, incoerente, difficile, con cui avrebbero dovuto man mano misurarsi; a volte lo stesso diviene impenetrabile e alquanto pericoloso. Il sostare a lungo sotto pendici intenti al lavoro, avvertendo, ogni volta, la sensazione che il mondo ti crolli in testa, per aver creato appunto vuoti perigliosi. "Presi" dalla foga di svelare i segreti ancora occultati dalla roccia e dal ghiaccio, per quanto il Bianco fosse stato battuto ed esplorato fin dai tempi immemori. Insomma, dice Roby: "i cristalliers resteranno sempre incompresi e di dubbia fama etica, poiché svuotano le montagne asportando l'anima delle medesime e, a detta di alcuni saccenti, abbassando le quote (sic!). Ma del resto se una mano divina ha creato i ricercati minerali delle fessure alpine (secondo gli ultimi dati scientifici circa venti milioni di anni or sono nell'ultima fase dell'orogenesi) è impensabile che abbia voluto egoisticamente lasciarli nelle buie cavità: queste perfette figure geometriche di luce così splendenti e naturalmente cariche di affascinante mistero". Nel 1983, frequentano con assidua costanza il bacino del Fréboudze o Fréboudges (primi quarzi fumés di un certo pregio) in Val Ferret e, in Val Veny, il Piccolo Monte Bianco (rose di ematite, brookiti), spingendosi anche sotto l'Innominata oltre il Rifugio Monzino, nel tentativo di rincorrere i favolosi anatasi (ottaedriti o biossido di titanio) che un biellese vi aveva scoperto, si saprà poi, all'Aiguille Jean Joseph Croux. Nel 1984, è la volta del Rifugio Gonella. Troppi collezionisti italiani, a partire dal cristallier di Milano Gualtiero Monistier, avevano rinvenuto in questo immenso petroso ghiacciaio, oltre alle numerose altre specie mineralogiche, splendide zeoliti, nonché quarzi con inclusione di bissolite ecc. Macché! Roberto e Franco pur "ficcanasando" sin sotto i torrioni delle Aiguilles Grises tornano a valle senza aver recuperato il benché minimo cristallino; i tempi non erano ancora maturi, è proprio il caso di dirlo: ci voleva pazienza nell'inseguirli. (Nel frattempo con un rigurgito di passione per l'alpinismo che si manifesta de temps en temps, in questo stesso anno a luglio, Roberto è nuovamente sull'Emilius con Osvaldo nella ripetizione della loro via "diretta" del 1980 sulla Parete Nord e aprono un nuovo itinerario leggermente diverso e più diretto alla vetta in compagnia di Sandro "Lupetto" Casalegno e di Maurizio Castellan). Ma veniamo al 1985, poiché per la loro formazione di cristalliers il bacino del Triolet sarà importante. Infatti Roberto con Osvaldo scala in giornata dal fondo valle l'Aiguille de Talèfre da Arnouva per la Cresta Est (via Emile Rey che Roberto effettua, ma non "vede", essendo impegnato a scavare come una talpa lungo tutti i 700 metri per accorgersi poi, al richiamo del compagno a mezzogiorno esatto, di essere arrivato in cima); la montagna si presentava ancora assai innevata, ma sufficiente per capire quanto questo massiccio monte fosse ricco di diaclasi (vene quarzifere). Pertanto da qui in avanti iniziano ad abbordarla con scorribande in numerose campagne (dici già "da qui in avanti" a venire). Bisogna tuttavia tener presente che, in questa zona, come nelle altre del massiccio in cui la geodinamica è stata intensa, cristalliers di ogni tempo, provenienti sia da Courmayeur sia da Chamonix attraverso il Colle Pierre Joseph, s'eran già fatti sedurre, esportandovi dalle fessure un nugolo incredibile di materiale. Solo grazie all'azione della canicola, che aveva ridotto e ridimensionato certi nevai pensili, i nostri due avrebbero trovato qualche fessura vergine. Intanto nel 1986, anno del bicentenario della prima salita al Monte Bianco (peraltro anche la seconda salita del 1787 fu effettuata da tre cristalliers di Chamonix in preparazione di quella scientifica del de Saussure), Roberto, in un giro solitario sulla Parete Est dell'Aiguille d'Estellette, scopre, quasi senza volerlo, un sito importante. Salendo in seguito con il suo compagno Franco, dotato di un fiuto/intuito superiore al suo oltre e virtuoso della mazzetta, ecco che, a sorpresa, si rivela una litoclase stupefacente a quarzi ialini (con cristalli "faden" o con anima, da mille e una notte). La scoperta diventerà fonte di campioni per molti, molti anni a venire. Così nel 1988, sul finire del mese di agosto, tornano pimpanti sul ramo superiore del ghiacciaio del Triolet e da questo verso (al?) il Plateau Méridional; è con loro l'aspirante guida di Gressan Stefano Grivel (unico superstite, con Hans Marguerettaz di Courmayeur, della tragedia del Lyskamm Orientale del 1985). L'estate fu torrida ed ovviamente anche la tenuta del permafrost assumeva scarsa consistenza all'interno d'un canalone del Versante Sud Est del Talèfre, dove devono dirigersi assolutamente. L'équipe evita una prima scarica di ghiaccio sopra la Goedecke (III°+), mentre più in alto sul canale Roberto è colpito a sopresa da due blocchi improvvisamente staccatisi dal nevaio pensile superiore, con i suoi compagni che lo pensano spacciato. Sarà invece lui, al rientro, a soccorrere Stefano, maldestramente scivolato sulle placche rocciose, rimasto schiacciato a pancia in giù con tutto il carico verso la crepaccia terminale, impossibilitato a muovere anche solo un dito e con la corda tesa come quelle di un violino. Ma alla fine tutto si risolve per il bene. "Una fame di quarzi morbosa, manco fosse una bella donna pronta ad offrire le sue grazie", afferma Roberto, ancora oggi preso da quelle emozioni. Tuttavia, al di là delle bersagliate di ghiaccio e dei massi evitati di un nonnulla, i cristalliers quel giorno arrivano a valle dopo la mezzanotte, con un carico di materiale collezionistico di oltre 40 chili a testa. Non senza altre peripezie, che avrebbero potuto rendere la gioia più che nefasta. Pochi giorni appresso, fuori dai lumi della ragione e infaticabili, Franco e Roberto tornano sullo stesso itinerario a recuperare altri quarzi fumés di un forno, che pareva inesauribile; per fortuna tutto resta calmo, imperturbabile. Neanche il fischio d'un sassolino. Sta di fatto che la montagna ha offerto loro ed in varie fasi durante quell'avvenuta trasformazione geologica, una rara scheelite (tungstato di Wolframio e calcio), numerosi quarzi gwindel o elicoidali assai ricercati dai collezionisti ed un grosso quarzo di circa 15 chili, che sarà poi ceduto al Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali con sede a Saint-Pierre.

 

 

Il 1989 è la chiave di volta per i due "avventurieri" di Charvensod, che confermano le lor indubbie capacità nell'affrontare ogni tipo di situazione; da questo momento il giovane alpinista Hans Marguerettaz di Courmayeur si unisce a loro formando così un'équipe formidabile operante nel settore meridionale del Massiccio. Hans del resto, dotato di un curriculum interminabile di exploit, con vie in solitaria eccezionali tra ypercouloir, supercouloir, concatenamenti etc, ritarda il passaggio a guida per via di un incidente in parapendio: con quell'effimero aggeggio visiona radente le rocce granitiche quando un colpo di vento lo sbatte contro.. ed ecco la sberla contro una parete. Pazzesco. Ma ormai è in piena ripresa ed impaziente di tornar in forma per iniziare una collezione di minerali seria. Nonostante cederà quasi tutto il materiale del grosso forno, da lui scoperto sul Versante Sud Est delle Aiguilles Marbrées, al Museo Regionale, integrando la sezione mineralogia con quei pezzi mancanti, come ben sa il presidente Efisio Noussan. Si terrà comunque altri campioni notevoli come una fluorite rossa ottaedrica centimetrica inserita nei quarzi morioni dell'Aiguille de Toula. Fin dalle prime uscite tutto è fantastico per quei tre vagabondi, guardati con stupore e sospetto in funivia: sgangherati, lordi, affaticati e piegati sugli zaini, quasi sempre gonfi al limite del "peso atomico". In effetti, oltre all'attrezzatura alpinistica, il cristallier deve portarsi appresso tutta una serie di ferraglia da scavo micidiale; questa lo stronca già fin dalla partenza all'alba; figuriamoci appunto quando la sorte lo premia con il dovuto carico di rinvenimenti. Del resto è proprio la difficoltà fisica che lo contraddistingue da un alpinista fine a se stesso ed esclama Roby: "beh ai più, un "peones!". Tuttavia, al di là di ciò che può pensar la gente, questa campagna resta nel loro animo incancellabile per ovvi motivi sopraccitati; a volte l'unione fa la forza nella capacità di dover faticare e soffrire. Ed eccoli giù nei territori prediletti da Hans, sotto il Vecchio Rifugio Torino, nel cosiddetto "canalone del cesso": famigerato luogo dai frequenti "agguati" e tale da disorientare perfino i gracchi corallini, quando si alza la polvere. Ma qui, al limite estremo di un nevaio irriducibile, fuoriescono da quel granito instabile quarzi fumés di rara bellezza che potrebbero ben figurare in qualunque collezione mondiale. Inoltre altri minerali come le rose di ematite, la calcite e quelli delle terre rare: la monazite e l'allanite dentro dei quarzetti che, per individuarli nell'argilla o nella clorite, bisogna essere proprio "cazzuti e duri". Poi è la volta delle Marbrées, del Colle del Gigante, del Grand Flambeau, dell'Aiguille d'Entrèves e così via, sino al Mont Noir du Peutérey (pirite di rara simmetria e quarzi ialini con epitassia della siderite). Si annovera da parte degli stessi anche una discesa dal Piccolo Monte Bianco direttamente sul Miage seguendo le tracce dei camosci, in arrampicata libera (piriti cubiche con quarzo e titaniti con adularia), su di un tracciato che, alpinisticamente parlando, è forse quasi sicuramente un primo percorso. Nuovamente sul Talèfre (fluoriti ottaedriche rosa con quarzi fumés; anche questi pezzi andranno al Museo, mancante di questo ricercato minerale a forma di piramide). Ancora all'Estellette, dove Hans cala Roberto dalla parete alta più di 60/70 metri con un piastrone di circa 65 chili sul groppone e con il timore che, essendo la corda alquanto assottigliata per il carico eccessivo, possa spezzarsi da un momento all'altro. Ancora oggi mi chiedo, quasi a voler fingere di non saperlo, come mai soffro di un mal di schiena tremendo. Ma con la soddisfazione e la consapevolezza che quel macigno finirà in donazione al Museo. Nel 1990 l'équipe è impegnata sotto i Mont Rouges du Peutérey (quarzi ialini tabulari geminati con cerussite); poi al Pic de la Brenva (quarzi fumés faden e fluorite ottaedrica verde). Hans, oltre al passaggio a Guida Alpina conseguirà anche quello di pilota di aliante. Dopodiché nel 1991 la banda si porta sulla "gengiva" del Dente del Gigante dove Franco li aspetta trepidante, poiché i suoi compagni scendono sul dirupo (Périades); superata la spalla superiore (Est) si spostano sul Versante Nord e, con una breve attraversata, sostano sullo Spigolo Nord Est ad un tiro di corda dalla vetta. Qui Hans, con le gambe a penzoloni, lavora con il palanchino e il rampino nella cavità cristallizzata (quarzi morioni di cui un esemplare stupefacente con quarzi a grappolo di oltre 40 cm in altezza). Affardellano gli zaini e, recuperato il bottino, tornano sui loro passi con una serie di corde doppie che devono a mano a mano attrezzare e con un terribile precipizio sotto di loro ed il senso di vuoto per un salto di 800 metri. Sono discese emozionanti e tali da mozzare il fiato in tutti i sensi, a causa del sovraccarico ovviamente. Poi in équipe, affrontano in diverse uscite uno tra i più selvaggi luoghi del Massiccio: la Punta Yeld, il Ghiacciaio dei Périades sulla Parete Nord-Nord-Ovest del Dente, dove certe "dalles" o placche, stanno appiccicate con lo sputo. Ambiente terribile e passaggi umani molto infrequenti, fin dai tempi della carovana Zimmer del 1900.   Infine il 7 settembre del 1991, con il gruppo sparpagliato sull'Aiguille de Talèfre, Roberto, posizionato su d'un irto suggestivo pendio ghiacciato della variante di Luigi Carrel (Versante Est), rimane vittima di un incidente pauroso, ma dall'esito incredibilmente fortunoso. Per evitare un masso che lo sovrasta in altezza, cade e "deve" seguirlo giù a rotta di collo lungo un colatoio per decine di metri arrestandosi, grazie ad una protuberanza granitica, lì giustappunto emergente in contraltare. La stessa gli salva la pellaccia. Se la caverà, (pressocché denudato) con la rottura del malleolo del piede sinistro e con escoriazioni superficiali in tutto il corpo. Fatto questo che gli servirà da lezione insegnandogli a calzare i ramponi, reggere la piccozza in mano, mettere il caschetto in testa, anche se cuoce il cervello ("tanto più di così!", dice lui) e ad affrontare l'avventura con un minimo di dovuta sicurezza, conoscendo l'andazzo. Ma si dubita alquanto che queste regole essenziali vengano sempre applicate o rispettate da parte del soggetto.   Tuttavia nel 1992, dopo avere superato (assorbito) le paure, è con Hans al Colle Savoie (gwindel e quarzi ialini). Scendendo in cordata dalla "Brêche" dei Monts Rouges de Triolet, con una attraversata a zig-zag sul ghiacciaio, si fermano sul margine di un isolotto roccioso in dirittura della Punta Isabella. Hans inizia a calare Franco sul lato opposto e, su una sporgenza a circa 30 metri dal sottostante ghiacciaio, il loro compagno in attesa fa una scoperta eccezionale su di una crepa quasi verticale e satura di terriccio. Infatti rampinando, rampinando con l'indispensabile ferro del mestiere, estrae un campione con due cristallini sopra piramidali verde chiaro di cui uno centimetrico. Quando i tre si trovano su quell'esile sporgenza, lì per lì, pur ammirandone la bellezza, non capiscono una mazza sulla natura o la specie di ciò che è stato ritrovato. (* Si trattava di un minerale delle terre rare: la Kainosite, unico per il Monte Bianco e conteso e richiesto in seguito anche da diversi Musei Alpini). Più avanti vengono depositati dall'elicottero nella depressione tra il Mont Gréuvettaz (éu? o eu?) e l'Aiguille de Leschaux, grazie all'interessamento del Noussan. Bivaccano lassù nel tentativo di recuperare del materiale; stessa cosa presso il Bivacco della Brenva. Nel frattempo Hans, ormai preso pure lui dal germe/virus della mineralogia, ha da tempo la fregola di organizzare nel suo paese la prima "Mostra Mercato" del minerale e del fossile, evento che si svolge poi il giorno di Natale.

 

 

Nel 1993, sopra una variante di Hans (diedro di 40 metri a fianco della Via Goedecke del 1975) della Cresta Sud-Est del Talèfre, Franco e Roberto con Giorgio Lale Maurix di Saint-Pierre, lavorando su un arcaico forno, riescono ad estrarne alcune piastre farcite di quarzi adamantini di circa 35 chili l'una. Verranno mostrate (esposte) alla seconda "borsa", che Hans organizza per l'ultima settimana di agosto; iniziano così ad esporre, oltre al frutto delle loro fatiche, libri antichi sulla tematica. Dopodiché, Franco con Giorgio e Dario Vighetti di Aosta sfondano un altro diaframma sulla litoclase dell'Estellette, che elargisce loro meravigliosi campioni con un faden di 27 cm. Sul finire di settembre, invece, Hans e Roberto dal Colle Supérieur de Savoie effettuano ricerche sullo Spigolo Sud-Sud-Ovest dell'Aiguille. Di questa via si è a conoscenza di una sola cordata in discesa; nessuna in salita. Ed eccoci giunti al 1994: è degno di nota ricordare i due giorni di fine luglio che Roberto passa con Hans alla Dent de Jétoula. Qui infatti dopo una calata di 60 metri sul versante Rochefort, dove il suo compagno, in un precedente giro solitario, aveva trovato numerosi gwindel morioni e pressoché tutti in matrice, Roberto inquieto non può fare a meno di ammirare non tanto l'imprendibilità del forno sospeso nel baratro, quanto l'indicibile bravura e il coraggio dell'amico, dotato peraltro di straordinaria umiltà. Dopo un bivacco all'addiaccio, l'indomani si calano fiancheggiando la Cresta Sud (Via Gigi Panei), ma senza esito alcuno, fino alla base del Ghiacciaio del Mont Fréty. Poi, raggiungendo il Rifugio del Pavillon, Hans gli comunica la possibilità di esporre i loro campioni lungo il tracciato della funivia, avendo ottenuto in pratica l'ok dal Conte Titta Gilberti. Teme tuttavia un sabotaggio della terza manifestazione dei minerali, anch'essa in programma, poiché ha avuto un contrasto duro con il Sindaco per questioni di natura politica sulle Valli Vény e Ferret ecc. "Il quale, e di lì a poco tempo dopo, probabilmente stizzito, non ci pensa su due volte a iniziare le pratiche per il decreto che vieterà la raccolta dei minerali sul territorio del Monte Bianco a lui competente con la sua giunta", spiegano i due (** Più o meno quello che era già in vigore a Bellecombe e Banchette nei comuni di Châtillon e Montjovet e, dove ovviamente, andrà preventivamente a prendere informazioni). Il 14 agosto Hans si trova ancora con Roberto sulla terrazza di Punta Helbronner: l'intenzione è quella di raggiungere il Dente del Gigante: ma una nevicata in quota, li devia giù verso la Vierge. Pertanto si calano lungo lo Sperone Settentrionale del Petit Flambeau trovando, quasi verso la sua base e sopra un terrazzino, insoliti quarzi ialini di oltre venti cm di altezza con laumontite. La gioia è esaltante! Come sempre d'altronde in questi casi si abbracciano, inconsapevoli che sarà ineluttabilmente purtroppo l'ultimo abbraccio, come ultimo sarà l'appuntamento di Hans con la montagna. Quindi felici, incartano minuziosamente i migliori pezzi, lasciandone altri in vista di un eventuale ritorno e risalgono lungo la scimitarra nevosa (anche questa probabilmente risulterà una via mai prima effettuata) raggiungendo in breve la funivia. Il giorno dopo Hans partecipa alla festa delle guide e, il 21, avendo il volo libero nel sangue, rientrando con il suo aliante dalla Val d'Ayas si schianta tragicamente sulla pietraia meridionale del Mont Tantané (La Magdeleine). Aveva solo 30 anni ed è sempre difficile farsi una ragione del perché o del per come; era un vero professionista a tutto campo. Non vi è dubbio che della perdita di un personaggio simile abbiano risentito la mineralogia in Valle e la piccola Città di Courmayeur, soprattutto nella tradizione dei cristalliers, dove ben si sa che il tempo perduto è rimasto tale nel dare continuità all'epopea. "Les cristaux c'est une étincelle de pureté", diceva la guida/cristallier Georges Bettembourg e, aggiungeva: "E' anormale passare una vita in montagna senza vedere dei cristalli". La manifestazione della mostra mercato viene presa in mano dagli amici di Hans Walter e André Grivel, ma purtroppo cesserà di esistere nel 1996. Intanto, nel 1995, c'è un grande evento culturale espositivo al Centro Saint-Bénin di Aosta: "Les Dents de la Terre", patrocinato dalla Regione Valle d'Aosta, al quale partecipa appassionatamente il gruppo mineralogico "Les Amis di Berrio". Lo stesso collabora in seguito con il collezionista francese Dr. Eric Asselborn per il suo: "Minéralogie de Chamonix".

 

 

Dopodiché, nel 1996, Franco e Roberto con l'intervento del geologo Paolo Castello proiettano le loro diapositive "I cristalliers si raccontano" al Jardin de l'Ange di Courmayeur, spazio riservato dall'amico di Franco Henry Truchet. Nel frattempo fervono i preparativi in vista dell'apertura del "Museo dei Cristalli" sotto la terrazza dei ghiacciai di Punta Helbronner, cosicché vengono contattati tramite Massimo Rey, per riempire una prima vetrina a muro. Tornano quindi alla Vierge a recuperare i quarzi lasciati nel '94, inserendoli con altri ed esponendoli con diversi minerali e con foto delle loro ricerche. Nel settembre del 1997, nasce così la sala dei cristalli più alta d'Europa, dedicata ad Hans; realizzazione patrocinata dalla Regione e fortemente voluta e con determinazione dalla Società Funivie a coronamento di quell'idea precursoria appunto del Conte Titta Gilberti, da diversi anni mancato pure lui. Si offre in questo modo un motivo di interesse in più per chi raggiunge Punta Helbronner. Ebbene, la sala viene suddivisa in sezioni: i campioni alpini del Museo di Mineralogia di Torino, presieduto dal geologo Giorgio Peyronel, nel centro della sala espositiva e quelli esclusivi del Massiccio del Monte Bianco trovati dai due cristalliers di Charvensod sul perimetro delle pareti; questi ultimi, a partire dall'anno successivo, saturano pure i vuoti lasciati. Il 3 ottobre, Roberto con la Guida di Courmayeur (ex cristallier) Mario Mochet, affronta in giornata l'impervio sperone dei minatori a oriente del Colle Infranchissable e tornano al Lac Combal con una prima documentazione fotografica sia del tracciato sia dell'interno della caverna (cose mai viste prima), sfatando e svelando una volta per tutte la natura del minerale argentifero, ovvero che la ganga della galena non fosse fluoridrica, come affermava invece il geologo Ercole Martina nel 1963 nella guida C.A.I./T.C.I., tale da ottenere vasti consensi in questa direzione da parte degli amatori della mineralogia, ma semplicemente di blenda (solfuro di zinco). Eppure sarebbe stato sufficiente consultare la relazione del Felice Giordano del 1864. Nel 1998, in seguito al disastroso distacco di un pilastro sulla Cresta Sudest, il Talèfre offre a (..), quel giorno in compagnia di Andrea Borney di Aymavilles, altre fluoriti ottaedriche rosa con i quarzi fumés, ben lungi tuttavia dalle appariscenti rosse del settore francese. A partire dal 1999, i nostri effettuano una prima scoperta di rilievo di stilbiti, quarzi e altre zeoliti, come la laumontite, l'heulandite e la cabasite, sulle pareti che si affacciano sul Ghiacciaio del Dôme, non lontano dal Rifugio Gonella e trovano intorno alle scarpate cospicui quarzi verdi di bissolite. Qui incontrano il custode e amico Alessio Ollier, una tra le migliori guide degli anni sessanta/settanta, che è ricordato anche come un bravo cristallier, cacciatore di razza insieme al fratello Attilio, nonché precursore del soccorso alpino. Nel 2000 in occasione del 150° anniversario della fondazione delle Guide di Courmayeur, Franco e Roberto vengono invitati alla loro festa di Ferragosto; i nostri due mettono a disposizione un campione di quarzo che poi offriranno in dono al Presidente della Repubblica Carlo Azeglio Ciampi in visita alla cittadina montana. Durante l'estate Franco in compagnia del giovane Luca Mochet trova, al posto giusto ed al momento giusto, un forno esponenziale radente il ghiaccio sul versante Sud-Ovest delle Aiguilles Marbrées: difficile quantificare il contenuto di quel giacimento, ma senz'altro i fumés sono pregevoli; trovano anche diversi epidoti e gwindel adamantini. Il 15 ottobre del 2001, Franco passa il momento più drammatico della sua vita, perché vuole rimettere mano al suo buco alle Marbrées, pur sapendo che quel sito è diventato ormai una trincea, come nella "Battaglia delle Ardenne". Comunque Roberto lo accompagna ed in breve tempo, attraverso il Ghiacciaio del Gigante, sono alla base; vista la situazione di tabula rasa, nonché il notevole materiale "defraudato", per non tornare indietro e malgrado le abbondanti nevicate precedenti, decidono di salire il pendio frontalmente esposto, così come giro di piacere. Sul crinale infatti, Roberto ne approfitta per scalare la Punta Payot. Sempre slegati e ognuno per sé, come di consueto in ricerca, conoscendo quella scarnificazione pietra per pietra, ... (periodo sospeso = licenza poetica nel lor modo d'eloquiar!). Durante la discesa sul versante opposto, ovvero lungo la cresta che conduce al Colle di Rochefort, tra una nebbiolina che andava e veniva e con un certo vento di tramontana da far rabbrividire un esquimese, Franco a un certo punto ed a poco più di un metro dal suo compagno, cade tragicamente all'interno di un canale fortunatamente gonfio di neve (a parte l'impatto violento iniziale da circa 3 metri d'altezza sulle rocce) di cui resta in balia rotolando rocambolescamente per decine e decine di metri. Difficile a credersi per chi conosce la zona, non va però a sbattere sulle rocce aguzze limitrofe, ma si arresta in quella strettoia, sprofondando su di un provvidenziale avvallamento, mentre lo zaino sparisce nei meandri del sottostante ghiacciaio. L'angoscia e la paura insuperabile di Roberto terminano nel momento in cui si accerta delle condizioni del fraterno amico. Anche Franco se la cava, certo, ma con 9 costole fratturate e lesioni varie. Hanno insomma entrambi pagato il giusto tributo al Monte Bianco per avergli razziato così tanti tesori? E ringraziando ancora gli DEI per non essere stati in fondo neppure tanto adirati. Nel 2003, dopo le campagne con gli amici di Torino e dintorni all'Alpe delle Frasse nella concessione a granati hessonite in Val di Susa, Roberto viene invitato ad esporre alcuni suoi pezzi scelti alla "Fondation Tissières" di Martigny insieme ai cristalliers del Vallese. Nel frattempo Franco, come Presidente dell'Associazione si prodiga a farsi rilasciare dal Presidente della Giunta Roberto Louvin uno speciale permesso per esportare, in collaborazione con il Museo Regionale, le splendide vesuviane dalla parete delle Banchette, cosa che puntualmente avviene. Del resto, in merito alla faccenda permessi, già in precedenza il Presidente Dino Viérin si era sempre prodigato ad erogare la concessione, "capendo con lungimiranza che non tutti sono dei criminali ammazza pietre solo buoni a risvegliar demoni e che esistono invece i collezionisti che, se possono, i minerali se li tengono divulgando scienza e cultura e senza far troppo chiasso e commercio", affermano i nostri. Infatti non per niente ci sono campioni di Roberto e Franco esposti da Nord a Sud della Dora Baltea: difficile trovarne altri disposti a tanto, ma si sa Les Amis di Berrio sono un numero esiguo e, quindi, politicamente contano come il due di picche in senso generale. Perciò sulle Banchette (Rodo), la Guida Aldo Cambiolo di Valpelline mette in sicurezza l'insolito cantiere. E' proprio con quest'ultimo che, durante l'estate avanzata, si portano nuovamente sul luogo delle super stilbiti sferiche e madreperlacee e che infine, dopo svariati giorni di disumano scavo a oltre 3000 metri di quota, i nostri vengono però gratificati da una sacca cristallizzata sprofondata su se stessa per più di tre metri tra il ghiaccio e il materiale inerte di quella roccia metamorfica: risulteranno, oltre ai già citati numerosi minerali accessori, i campioni più belli dell'intero arco alpino. Anche il Museo si dà da fare e, con le autorità preposte (Corpo Forestale), concede loro un volo in elicottero per portare a valle la sacca del restante materiale, ivi compresa una piastra di oltre 70 chili che andrà nella sede di Saint-Pierre. (*** Oggi in fase di restauro con la speranza che i MINERALI abbiano la giusta sede all'interno delle mura del castello e non più in biglietteria a fianco delle toilette, punto.) Ora, sui successivi ritrovamenti e, speriamo, futuri di questi due "insensati", andar oltre potrebbe rasentare addirittura la noia, senza contare le esigenze di spazio tiranno. Pertanto si può proseguire, tanto per capirne i movimenti, con il ritorno di immagine che hanno avuto nel prosieguo della loro lunga carriera.

 

 

In effetti, nel 2004, ci sarà la seconda esposizione a Martigny per Roberto; a giugno, come Gruppo Mineralogico, la mostra "Cristalli e Minerali in Valle d'Aosta" al Museo Archeologico di Piazza Roncas in Aosta; è da sottolineare come in primis vada ringraziata per l'evento l'Assessore alla Cultura Teresa Charles. Il 21 agosto, per commemorare il decennale della scomparsa del loro compagno Hans, organizzeranno una proiezione di diapositive al Jardin de l'Ange (la terza in ordine). Mentre per l'ultima visita del Pontefice Giovanni Paolo II ad Introd, vien loro richiesto un cristallo di rocca (simbolo di purezza e dell'inaccessibilità delle montagne), che verrà poi donato a Lui (ma è stata esplicitata al medesimo la provenienza? Almeno per avere una piccola Raccomandazione per il Paradiso!). Nel 2005, Franco viene intervistato dalle Guide Hervé Barmasse e Pietro Giglio, per la trasmissione "Qui Montagne" (RAI 3 Regione). La terza esposizione a Martigny ha per tema il traforo del Sempione; Franco ne afferra l'importanza e partecipa, assecondando il collezionista svizzero Alexander Saltzman. Nel 2006, vengono contattati nuovamente dalla Regione, per l'allestimento di una vetrina di minerali nel Museo delle Alpi, al Forte di Bard, dove espongono una notevole drusa di quarzi fumés delle Marbrées nello spazio dedicato al grande John Ruskin. Ad inizio marzo, in seguito alla mostra al Museo Archeologico con relativo successo internazionale, Franco e Roberto sono invitati ad esporre i loro migliori pezzi del settore meridionale del Massiccio al "Mineral Show" di Bologna, avente per oggetto il Monte Bianco. Infine chiusura della stagione con l'invito da parte del "Club de Minéralogie" di Chamonix all'inaugurazione del suo magnifico Museo. Nel 2007, in programma c'è un altro invito alla Festa delle Guide di Courmayeur, e questo per aver inserito in comune ed insieme ad altri cristalliers, minerali e, soprattutto, un quarzo ialino di Hans di 6 chili proveniente dal Becco dell'Aquila (l'unico pezzo che, se non altro, la vedova Joanne Grey aveva ceduto per l'esposizione di Punta Helbronner) oltre a numerose foto che lo immortalano in ricerca. Esposizione comunque intelligente organizzata da Luciano Maregliati, Pierino Rey e Luca Mochet. Ai primi di agosto del 2009, per la 42° "Exposition Bourse internationale Chamonix Mont-Blanc" sono artefici di due apposite vetrine con le collezioni dei pezzi migliori, riconoscenti per la loro assidua presenza durante la riunione di fine anno per sentire le "nouvelles" e la "cotisation", ormai più che ventennale ma, soprattutto, per onorare e far conoscere i minerali del versante opposto, pressoché sempre snobbati. Nell'autunno del 2010, dopo la visita a Plan Félinaz dell'organizzatore della "Borsa internazionale" di Monaco, il sig. Keilmann e del giornalista altoatesino M. Wachtler, giunge la bella soddisfazione tanto attesa, cioè esporre le loro fatiche insieme ai migliori cristalliers dei tre Stati del Massiccio del Monte Bianco. Che dire di una manifestazione, quella tedesca sopracitata, con oltre 200.000 visitatori? Coronati da quel successo, dove sul sito precedente di Roberto c'è un'impennata di passaggi strabiliante (oltre 275.000 ed in breve tempo!). Nel 2011, sempre tramite la Regione, c'è la richiesta di prestito di due grossi quarzi liberi che, affiancati alle piccozze Grivel, raggiungeranno Roma per il 150° Anniversario dell'Unità d'Italia e che, udite, udite!, pare sian poi giunti addirittura a Washington. Per l'inaugurazione alla Biblioteca Regionale, Espace "Porta Documana" della mostra di Chatrian ("L'arte orafa in Valle d'Aosta"), oltre all'oro nativo della miniera di Brusson, allestiscono diversi cubi con molteplici cristalli di quarzo nelle più svariate forme e colori. Pertanto l'epilogo li conduce a Punta Helbronner dove, per i lavori di smantellamento in vista del nuovo impianto, vengono aiutati con dovuta letizia dal personale a svuotare le vetrine, smontarle e rimontarle in una saletta messa a disposizione da Roberto Francesconi al Pavillon del Mont-Fréty; qui i minerali di Roberto e Franco, dopo circa 14 anni in cui incalcolabile è stato il numero di visitatori, resteranno ancora esposti in attesa d'una nuova collocazione, con la viva speranza che sia in uno spazio meno angusto.
