Not another list?

So what, you may now be asking yourself, is a Marilyn? Well a Marilyn is a type of mountain or hill in Great Britain, Ireland or surrounding islands with a relative height of at least 150 metres (492 ft), regardless of absolute height or other merit. The name was coined by Alan Dawson in his book ‘The Relative Hills of Great Britain’ (1992) as an ironic contrast to the designation Munro, used of a Scottish mountain with a height of more than 3,000 feet (910 m), which is homophonous with (Marilyn) Monroe. Because the Marilyns do not qualify on the basis of absolute height many of Britain’s most famous peaks are not listed, including Scafell, Aonach Mor and Carnedd Dafydd. A benefit of dealing with relative, rather than absolute height, is that it eliminates many of the most tedious summits that plague most British lists, and because many of the summits are located in areas that are outside the main mountain ranges, it offers a wider variety of landscapes to explore.

There are 1554 Marilyns identified in Great Britain and surrounding islands: 1214 in Scotland, 179 in England, 156 in Wales and 5 on the Isle of Man. Furthermore, since Clem Clements published his in a booklet ‘The Hewitts and Marilyns of Ireland’ (1998) another 453 summits in Ireland (66 in Northern Ireland and the remainder in the Republic of Ireland) have been added to the list, bringing the total to 2007. Of course, as the title of the page suggests, this list contains only those found in Great Britain.
