The Weiblkante follows the ridge that divides the north and south side of the Ettaler Mandl massif. It is a great alternate way to the top, offering 2 short pitches of rock climbing protected by bolts.

It would be a great little climb to introduce a beginner on. Experienced climbers may feel comfortable soloing it. However, the route is quite steep in the first 50 feet, with lots of exposure down the vertical north face.

The Weiblkante is just one of about a dozen climbs on the massif, ranging in difficulty from UIAA IV to VIII. It would be great fun to bring a rope and explore these other climbs.

Getting There

Follow the directions to reach the Ettaler Manndl from the main page. On the trail up from Ettal, about 3 minutes before you reach the start of the via ferrata, a side trail goes up against the base of the rock to the left. Follow this to the ridge crest, where the route starts. Some bolts are visible.

Route Description

2nd pitch

Climb up on the left side of the crest, passing a couple of bolts to reach a scrub tree right on the crest. Continue up from here, eventually meeting two bolts you could belay from. From here, scrambling or belayed climbing on the crest will meet up with the standard route about 20 feet below the summit.

Essential Gear

Rock shoes are a good idea. If belaying, then a short rope and quickdraws would be desired.
