South America
Route up was some variation of the South America route and used a scree shoot in between the saddle of Altyn and Henkel for a fast decent.

Spur decision
Was chased off the side of this mountain early this same summer by bad weather. Wasn't planning on returning but while sitting on Apikuni I decided descending down to natahki lake and up Altyn looked pretty easy and went for it. I think having the lake surounded by wildflowers to myself was my favorite part.

Smokey Summit
Western Saddle Variation route on a super smoke filled day. It's true what they say... stay out of the red quicksand. Beautiful summit with views of many, many lakes!

Altyn
with Adam, Zac, Derek, and Moon. Originally intended on climbing Henkle, but had some first timers out, and Henkle was holding quite a bit of snow, so we made our way to Altyn.

Altyn Heinkel
did Altyn and Heinkel together. stunning view of the Many Glacier valley. saw a couple griz on the way down.
Both times via Lake Natahki, descended on Many Glacier side. One of the better half day adventures one can have in the Many Glacier area.

Took about two hours to get up, including stops for pictures. Wonderful views. Shouted out my greetings to Saintgrizzly on one of the last Glacier peaks he climbed.

South America route. Pretty basic...the scramble around the cliffs near the top is great. Cool gigantic summit cairn.

Altyn Peak
Nice mountain and nice climb. Four goats and four bighorns were waiting for us at the saddle. Good views of Mt. Wilbur and Allen Mountain. Taking a scree slide down the mountain is a good way for a quick descent. Climbed with Rebelgrizz and JFK.
Climbed several times from Many Glacier, Swift Current, and Natahki Lake. Great half day hike with amazing views. One of the great scree ski descents in the park.

from Many Glacier Hotel
Took great climber's trail past South America. Arduous scree slog after that. Amazing views of the entire Many Glacier Valley.
Climbed again on June 30, 2009 via Natahkia Lake route. Great route; hanging valley above Apikuni Falls is wonderful, and the climb up to Natahki Lake was lots o' fun. Descent to Many Glacier Hotel was, unfortunately, quite eventful; dropped my Nikon off a 40 foot cliff. Surprisingly, two of my three lenses made it!
Climbed again via Natahki Lake route on July 27, 2010. Took amazing scree run from the saddle down towards Many Glacier entrance road. Probably the best scree skiing I've encountered in the entire park.
One more time on June 9, 2013. Slogged up the South America route and headed for a large snowfield clinging to cliffs a few hundred feet west of the summit. Made our way through some loose, scrub-covered class III cliffs and easily onto the top from there. Scree descent down towards Swiftcurrrent.
Slogged directly up the south slope scree route from Many Glacier Campground on October 18, 2016. Encountered all sorts of weather: strong winds, calm periods, pockets of sunshine, zero visibility, snow, sleet and rain. Hundreds of bighorn sheep and a few dozen goats grazing on the open slopes of Altyn/Henkel.
