Begin to hike late morning with my family. Hiked the Gunnison Route from the Visitor Center on the South Rim. Did not run into anyone on the trail. Steep cool wall very quickly heated up on the afternoon. Bring lots of water!
Scrambled/slid down the trail from the visitors' center to the canyon floor and stayed the night. The trail is steep and comprised of loose rock and dust (in the summer). Legs were screaming a couple of days later, but it was worth it for the wild scenery at the canyon floor. Didn't see anyone else until nearly returned to visitors' center.

Gunnison Route
Hiked the Gunnison Route from the Visitor Center on the South Rim. Early start. Ispent an hour or so at the bottom. I didn,t see anyone until I was nearly out!! Very cool!!
What an awesome place! Mostly a class 3 scramble. They aren't kidding about the poison ivy! We managed to get through unscathed, but took a lot of time just avoiding plants. Witnessed a climbing accident on the nearby wall, some protection popped out with a lot of rock and barely missed the rope team. Notified the rangers on the way out. Hope they all got out ok.

Great place
I spent a week wandering throughout the area. Crazy amounts of good rock in one place. great climbing.
Spent the previous day (July 4th) near Leadville where it was snowing. It was over 90 degrees at Black Canyon of the Gunnison.

Warner Route
Call this canyon the Thigh Master. Wow. Lovely, just beautiful. But I hurt for days after returning home from this backback to the bottom and back. Crawlin' and scratchin' our way back to the summit...

Long Draw
Terrific hike, not too difficult. The gorge and rapids at the bottom are spectacular! I found a couple fun ledge systems to scramble about on partway down the draw. Recommended!
Did not make it too far into the canyon, but I hiked all around the rims.

Remarkable
I do quite a bit of work in the Delta/Montrose area and visit the Canyon whenever I have a chance. Have done most of the trails around the rim and hiked part of the way into the canyon. Hope to spend a night along the river someday near the base of the Painted Wall.

Multiple trails
Visited initially in the late fall back in the early 90's up on the North Rim. Quiet and unspoiled place. Not much built up (as yet). Hiked the North Vista trail roughly half-way. Been back 3 times since, Warner Point, Dragons Point, Devils Point & Rock Point are all nice little excursions. Un-godly hot in August though!!
Went down to the river from S. Rim and back up one morning. Short but extremely steep. Incredible sense of isolation, and one powerful river. You don't think of going wading in here!
