Fun!
My son and I did the east butte last spring, came back today for the main summit. Very satisfying ridge walk/scramble, with some great geologic details on the way!

Sweet Little Treat
Been on my tick list for years, finally decided to head up there, leaving home at around 4am and starting the hike just after sunrise. Splendid views! Fun hiking! Hit up Harmony Borax Works and Zabriskie Point on the way back.

Evening hike
Arrived in Death Valley from Vegas a bit later than I'd hoped for... Original intent was to hike Corkscrew but waning daylight led me to settle on Death Valley Buttes. I was not disappointed. Fun, easy route with expansive views the whole way! On the return, I descended north from the saddle and spent time exploring the eastern reaches of the buttes, encountering several bats as the sun set.

Slippery and Steep.
The hike wasn't actually all that bad. The only thing is that if the grade is steep and the ground is unstable you end up sliding quite a bit.

Last minute decision
Did Bat the previous day and wanted to shorten our Sunday drive back to the Bay Area, so we decided to snag something as a warm-down on our way through/out of the park on Saturday. DVB hit the mark perfectly. An easy and unassuming hike with a tiny bit of scrambly bits at the end. Fun!
PS if I ever write a desert peak bagging book I'm calling it "Scrambly Bits and Slippery Shit" and putting a pic of this peak on the cover.

Pre-shift
Winter 2013
Decided while at work last night to climb the Buttes before my shift today. Headed up with Eli this morning, and we both really enjoyed the Class 3 scrambling near the end. It gave this little hike a bigger feel! Well, off to work!

After Corkscrew, I had a couple more hours to spare, so I could not resist hitting DV Buttes.
The USGS benchmark is busted out, and only some broken cement remains. Bummer.

Death Valley Buttes
Climbed both buttes in the morning. It was a fun ridge traverse with great views. A few days later we met two artists who had painted the buttes as we were climbing them.

East Butte - East Face
Scrambled up the east face of the East Butte (2720+) only to be chased from the summit by hoardes of flying red ants who seemed to be living only at the apex of the peak. A fun scramble - great Death Valley views.

Use trail from the east
Short, but fun. With Corkscrew earlier in the day. Trip Report
I'd already done a hike in a nearby canyon this day, so I only got to the summit of the eastern butte due to fading light (a little too exposed to do "Red Top" alone in the dark). Nice views--it's Death Valley!
