Route Climbed: Laguna Meadow to Colima and Boot Canyon Trails Date Climbed: May 28, 2000
We set out from the Basin trail head at 8:00, hiking up the Laguna Meadow Trail. About half way to the first saddle we encountered a mother black bear and her two cubs. We watched them for about 20 min. before moving on. We basically circled the peak before the final scramble to the top, following the Colima and Boot Canyon Trails to the Emory Peak Trail. The view is spectacular and it was a clear day with decent visability. We ate lunch and took pictures before hiking down the Pinnacles Trail. The kids rushed ahead to report the bear sighting to the Ranger Station while my wife and I ambled into the Basin area at 4:30 PM. We were hot, sore, dusty and hungry but it was well worth it.
Route Climbed: Emory Peak Trail Date Climbed: August 1990
The second mountain I ever climbed. Took a road trip from Dallas with high school friends before we all went to college. Left a bottle of champagne under the rocks on the summit. Wonder if it is still there...
Route Climbed: South Rim Loop Date Climbed: May 2002
cool side trip off the loop to make for an exciting, exhausting 17 mile tour of the Chisos Mountains. Or this makes a good, short destination hike in itelf. There is a little bit of slightly exposed class 2+ scrambling at the very very end, but you must do it to get any kind of view. The summit is the highest point in Big Bend. I've been up here a couple of times and there always seems to be about a million ladybugs. This whole area is one of the coolest hikes in Texas!
Route Climbed: Pinnacles trail / Emory peak trail Date Climbed: March 9 2004
Very Crowded trail at start . At the summit with two others very good views in all directions. The day before climbed Lost Mine peak a difficult bushwhack through much creosote bushes and cacti.Very cool time in Big Bend .

My first Chisos Summit (1st Texas Summit for that matter). I loved it. Such a unique place. A great hike with great friends ....not a bad way to spend an afternoon!
Route Climbed: normal route Date Climbed: November 1992, January 1994
This is a nice dayhike if you are in the area and the views from the top are fantastic. On one trip the clouds were passing through us on the summit before rushing down over the edge into the Chisos Basin.
Route Climbed: Emory Peak Trail Date Climbed: Dec. 20, 1997
I watched the sun go down from atop Emory Peak on a beautiful, clear December evening. It was perhaps the most incredible sunset I had ever seen, mixed with the expansive views south into Mexico. Emory Peak is probably not a destination in itself, but it is certainly an excellent side trip off of the Chisos Mountain/South Rim trail.
