winter
Rotten snow, a broken ski binding, and a bad weather report didn't keep us from the summit. Awesome day.

Winter Ascent - Boo Yaaa!
Against all odds, crzyjt and I skied, bootpacked, postholed and occasionally groveled our way to the summit on a winter day that was forecast to be horrendous. But fate smiled upon us with clear skies for the entire ascent. And then she smiled even more with an incredible snow squall during our descent that turned our ski descent from an icy death luge into a creamy powder feast.

Std. West Slopes
After doing Princeton five weeks earlier, daughter Trisha and I continued through the southern Sawatch. We drove to the creek crossing at approx. 10,850 ft., and had an easy 7 hour RT. With a decent early start (6 am) we had the summit all to ourselves at about 9 am. My 18th 14er.

4WD & Hiking fun
Needed a break after grinding up Shavano yesterday, so drove the 4-Runner up Antero to the ridge at about 12,500 after the switchbacks. (Those switchbacks are NOT for the faint of heart). Ran into a pack of feral Jeep geeks who thumbed their noses at me, too cool. Saw a heard of goats up close at the start of the class 2 hike. The hike to the top was easy and fun.

Very busy mountain ... there were even 4-wheelers up high. I'd rather hike.

Easy 14er.
What a hike! Knocked it out in 5 hours car to car. Did it with my bud, John Morehead (his first 14er!) and he even had a pulled hamstring! Got down and out of the storms just in time.

Standard route from Baldwin Gulch
Started up at 7:03AM from just below treeline, reached an empty summit at 8:56 via the road and up & across the ridge. Beautiful wildflowers all the way to the ridge. Signed the summit log, took several pix, above the clouds stayed on top about 25mins, back down by 10:56. My 23rd 14'er on this beautiful morning.........sweet!!!

Driving back from the trailhead proved to be more exciting than the hike. We met a 4-wheel drive caravan coming up the mountain at a place where the "road" was only 1 narrow lane wide. Talk about fun. My wife had to close her eyes while we passed each other!

Climbed with SPer "asphazell" and Lil. The storms didn't move in until we stood on the summit. Not much snow in the Southern Sawatch this year..

Alone All Day!
Reached the summit at 8:40 in the morning, then went over and tagged Cronin Peak as well. Beautiful day and not another soul within sight!
As gurlyclimber said, we sort of invented our own way up this mountain using a combination of the road, grassy slopes, snow filled gullies, steep talus, and exposed ridge scrambling. Seeing as it was Easter, I just thought "Easter Basket" was the best way to describe this fun alternate route. Except for the postholing at the end of the day, this was in our opinion the perfect way to climb this peak. Get it before the gullies melt and you can avoid the switchbacks on the road!
