Finally!  Sucess!

Mount Belknap is so prominent and striking that it's difficult NOT to wanna climb it. It took me three trips to the Tushars to finally even attempt it.

On July 20, 2019, I hiked City Creek Peak one day, and the next tried for Belknap but the road from the south was closed. Then in August 2020 I hiked Circleville Mountain one day, Blue Lake the next, but then I was too sore and tired to attempt Belknap the next day.

I finally returned two weeks later for a quick overnighter just to hike Belknap. I camped just off the road on the ridge dividing North Creek from Pine Creek (Bullion Canyon). The next morning it was a short drive to where I started my hike. It really wasn't as bad as I expected, but it still took me five hours to complete the hike. I was done at noon so I drove down the mountain and up Bullion Canyon to check things out, then headed home.

Nice day for it  Sucess!

Not too hot, not too cold, just right for hiking. I wanted to make things tougher for myself so I parked right where FR123 and FR113 meet. 7.3 miles and 3300 feet one way. Since I had parked heading north I opted to take a shortcut past the big knoll instead of taking the standard route back. I'm about 95% sure I found the old summit register. There was a somewhat battered mailbox directly off the east side next to one of the old mining roads. Guessing it got blown off or some schmuck threw it off. Took it back to my car.

Despite the rough road and remoteness this mountain sees a decent number of people. 4 separate groups had signed the summit register the day before I got there. Don't expect solitude out here

En Route to Baldy  Sucess!

Steep scree wasn't too bad thanks to the larger rocks higher up that seemed to be more stable. The views are incredible. Ran into 3 people on this portion of the hike including a couple from SLC that took a pic of me at the summit looking dorky as usual. The skies were clear but it was a bit windy. Went onto Mount Baldy from here, which was harder.

Wow!  Sucess!

This is one of the most impressive peaks in the state. The view reminds me of approaching Pfeiff only taller and steeper. Absolutely loved this day.

Short & sweet  Sucess!

Quick climb with great views. The steep, loose pitch up from the saddle looks really bitchy from below, but turns out to be no big deal. Only ~ 200 yards are tough, then the ascent trail follows easy use trail through packed-down talus.

This is a short one, and a great day would be Delano in the morning, Belknap in the afternoon. Both short, sweet and fun, but with very, very different terrain.

Canada Day, eh  Sucess!

Wanted to do this quick and easy, but the road was gated at Poison Spider Creek. I was there to do the peak, so I had to walk 4 miles on FR 123 to the trailhead, that took from 9:30 am to 10:45 am (1 hr 15 min). Followed the switch backs up to a saddle then wander to the base of the summit cone. The first half up the scree of the summit cone was basically strait up and tough work. The second half of the cone is a trail heading west and was easy walking. Wasn't too impressed with a big plastic sign on top announcing the peak name and elevation, but at least any doubts (which were non existent) of being on the wrong summit were washed away. From the trailhead to the peak was 1 hour 15 mins, as well. From Belknap I wandered to Delano.

One big lump of rocks  Sucess!

#1 10-16-15 I would hate to have to locate the initial part of the trail in darkness. The first 400' of vertical up the "summit cone" are taxing (scree to the max) yet the final 250' are like a stroll in an English Garden! Windy on top; rock shelters were a welcome sight. The summit sign is impressive, too. Didn't have time (or strong inclinations) to tackle Baldy so saving that rock pile for next time. Mit Yz.

Belknap Summit  Sucess!

Summited Belknap on a near-perfect day. Unfortunately, asthma attacks kept me from summiting Baldy, but I ended up climbing Belknap twice. Because I was struggling so much to breathe, this was one of the most challenging days in the mountains I have ever had. Still, no complaints.

Belknap and Delano  Sucess!

9/24/2013 Drove up through Big John Flats to about 11,200 feet and parked by a locked gate leading up to the ridge Delano Peak is on. From there I climbed up and over the ridge and followed the road leading towards the Bullion trailhead area for a while before breaking off and heading towards the saddle and SE face of Mount Belknap. Very windy and cold, but a perfectly clear day. The views were outstanding of the rest of the range and of the changing fall colors. From Belknap I hiked back along the road and regained the ridge around 11,400 and followed it to Delano Peak. Drastically different terrain between the two peaks. Fun day in the Tushars.

Summitted, had to bail on Baldy  Sucess!

Parked at the sharp switchback at about 10,800. Pretty uneventful until the steep, loose scree/talus of the face of Belknap. Slogged up that and made the summit. Excellent summit log container, best I've ever seen. We continued about 30% down the ridge to Baldy, but threatening weather moved in and we had to bail. We were pelted by hail on the way back, so it was probably a wise choice.

Poison Creek was no problem for two Xterras, in case you're wondering if your car can make it (I was).

Excellent views in all directions, and I think these are some of the most aesthetic peaks I've ever had the joy of hiking. They are truly badass.

Long day  Sucess!

Hot as hell even at 12000'!

Started at Mud Lake. Walked the road to the 10973 saddle. Took a short detour SE of the pass to get to the top of 11420. Went back to the pass and followed or skirted the ridgeline to Belknap. Traversed the ridge from Belknap to Baldy. Baldy looked impossibly steep from a distance, and was not a particularly pleasant ascent. From Baldy, went back on the ridge a short way to the first prominent bump. Descended the SE ridge of this bump to a point north of Blue Lake. Could not find the Skyline Trail which is a National Recreation Trail. Expected it to be really prominent, but it wasn't. Went to the far side of the lake and went up and we finally ran into it. Followed the Skyline Trail to a switchback north of Shelly Baldy Peak. Took a detour to Shelly Baldy, having to go over a big bump along the way, ouch! Then made our way back to the Skyline Trail which we followed to the trail to Mud Lake, which we followed back to our car.

Our Subaru Legacy (not Outback) made it to Mud Lake with only minor difficulties. There was one short steep section that took several tries to get up and we scraped bottom crossing Poison Creek.

Kind of a long slog with snow from ~9k feet. Didn't have the energy to continue to Baldy. Trip report.

Traversed  Sucess!

Started on the Big John Flats Road at around 10,900ft. It took us an hour and 20 to reach the summit of Belknap. We did Baldy after and it took us an one and forty-five to reach the summit of Baldy from the summit of Belknap. Then we went down to Blue Lake and hiked up to our cars. Awesome Loop! The views of Baldy are so colorful!

With Baldy  Sucess!

Started at 1st Big John Meadow. 19 mile loop over Belknap and Baldy. Much extra elevation for snow-avoidance. Lots of damage on road to Marysville; 5 to 6'deep gouge in the road above 11k'.

Fantastic Summit  Sucess!

Belknap seemed intimidating but the closer I got the less it became. The summit of Belknap offers the best views of the Tushars. It was a quick and easy climb. Time constraints did not allow me to continue to Baldy.

Mountain Goats  Sucess!

Very interesting terrain and awesome colors every where. Greg and I saw some mountain goats while we were there. Off the summit, we decided to go straight down the face. I stepped onto the loose tiny rocks and just went sliding, like a was skiing on rocks! At the time I was a little scared, but after I thought it was pretty fun. Let's do it again!

SE Ridge  Sucess!

Got out of Vegas late, but still found time to take a leisurely stroll up this one when we got in. Weather threatened, but never did anything.

Fantastic scenery in this area. Reminds me of parts of Colorado.
