A friend of mine refers to the seemingly unending sandy slope as "poop-out hill," which I think is an apt description. After getting up the sandy slope and going up Russell's East Ridge, we decided to wander over and check out Carillon, before heading down. Worth the wander! Beautiful views and a cool perspective of Russell.

Long Day
Ascended Carillon since we were there after hauling a load from the Portal to UBSL before ascending the Rockwell Variation to the East Ridge of Russell. Descended the sand slope to UBSL.

Beautiful view of Russell
Fun summit to hike, after coming down from Russell. Cell phone reception on the summit (probably from Lone Pine.) This was my first day I bagged two peaks in one hike.

Nostalgia tour
We had a short weekend, so stayed in a motel, and climbed Carillon the next day. Only saw a few parties hiking out that Sunday, mostly from doing routes on Whitney. Pretty routine route, but weather was unstable, with thunderstorm activity lurking about. We ascended at 1000 feet per hour, which is OK for an off the couch couple in their mid 40's. Trail up through the Ebersacher Ledges and to lower boyscout lake has improved greatly from just a few years ago. Views of Mt. Russel from Carillon are awesome.
I was heading for Russell and Carillon, but got rain, hail, lightning, and Carillon instead. I still would call that a good day. Have to go back again for Russell, though.

From Clyde Meadows
Route from Clyde Meadows is direct. Good class 3 scrambling on good rock can be had in the last 400 feet if you traverse high to Carillon's summit.
