Spent the night before at Marcy Dam Leanto. A friend met us in the morning, and we hit the summit with cloudy, cold, windy conditions. The hike out through Avalanche Pass was unforgettable.

Via Lake Arnold
What a beautiful winter day. Sky was void of clouds as we started hiking. Clouded up as we got to the summit. Made for som interesting orange and red hues on the coulds when looking east. Awesome views of Marcy and the McIntyre Range. Colden is one of my favorite hikes in the 'Daks. Also summited in the summer via the trap dike, as a sunset hike, and from Lake Colden. This is a mountain that is not to be missed. Gotta love the balanced rock.

Pretty nice day but cold on the way down. Did with Armstrong and Sawteeth.
did this one in reverse. went up easy side and descended trap dyke. still way awesome!! the clouds were passing by at high rates of speed! and after descent the traverse past avalanche lake is classic! or b-4 ascent if youre smart
Route Climbed: Via Lake Colden Date Climbed: October 13, 1996
Spent two cold days bagging the High Peaks. Hit Algonquain, Coldon and Gray, spent a brutally cold night in a lean-to then hit Skylight, Marcy and Phelps. We were past peak for the foliage thus making this a cold, overcast and gloomy adventure.
I simul -soloed this route with Eric Aldenhoff. The ice was plastic the going was easy. Definitely one of the great one-day alpine climbs in the North East.
Route Climbed: Ice Climb from Avalanche Lake Date Climbed: February 1988
My first introduction to ice climbing. Cold weather and postholing and my first time wearing double boots made for a lot of work, but the euphoria at the summit was worth it.
A VERY COLD first weekend in October (as you can see from the pictures).
I don't remember much except for the frozen plants near the summit... and the fog... why climb a mountain except for the view? Sorry, I'm not one to enjoy suffering for the sake of suffering. :)
Route Climbed: The Trap Dyke Date Climbed: July 26, 2003
My first high peak summit, and hiked it with my brother Chris, Dan, Tom, and Mike. We went up through the dyke, which was definitely a challenge (good thing Dan brought his chaw for the "energy" it provides). After spending much of my life hiking trails in the southern or western Adirondacks, I'm hooked on the high peaks region. Thanks Mike.
Route Climbed: Loj - Lake Colden - Mt Colden Date Climbed: May 21, 2004
Nice, steep hike up from Lake Colden, seemed quite a bit easier going down towards Lake Arnold. BTW, on this particular day, Lake Arnold was a nice sight.
A word to the wise: in May 2003, we had to turn back because it was just too icy to negotiate without crampons.
Route Climbed: Trap Dike Date Climbed: 23 August 2003
Fun climb, I'd call it 4th class. Maybe some 5.0 or 5.1 climbing on the steps in the dike. The slide has some gut check sections. I belayed my wife across a few spots. Gear: a couple of 4 ft slings and a few larger nuts. I soloed everything then belayed Margaret on 50ft of 7mm cord.
