Hiked up from the Loj, took the Lake Arnold trail up and across to the other side. Then up to Gray Peak, then Mt Skylight and finished with Mt Marcy. Mt Skylight didn't seem as long a hike as it looked like from Gray Peak. Still, a good .5 mile hike up to some great views...and lunch! Headed back to the Loj via the Vanhovenburg trail. 11 hrs, 19 miles loop...I slept very well this night when I got home!

Windy frozen world
We camped at the lean to at the base of Marshall and began our hike from there. We first went to Gray and then saw Skylight. Who could resist? The summit was a frozen moonscape with a steady 65mph wind coming straight out of Canada. Hard to stand on the summmit! Had to break trail, due to windswept drifts. Loads of fun.
I couldn't find a rock to bring up with me, but the Mt.Gods were gracious and kept the weather fine. Beautiful blue sky. A perfect winter day!!!!! fyi, If you have it, wear it.

Last 46er!
Summited Mount Skylight during a Saturday through Monday backpacking trip. We backpacked in the rain Saturday night to one of the Avalanche Lean-Tos from the ADK Loj, spent the night, woke up late on Sunday morning and hit the trail to Feldspar via Lake Arnold. There is one section on the way to Feldspar that is currently flooded and requires balancing on the many floating logs on the trail. We then took the trail to Lake Tear of the Clouds summited Gray Peak, and then headed to Four Corners junction. We began our ascent up Skylight, which required crampons due to many iced over sections of rock. Above treeline the winds picked up and my jacket actually began to freeze solid. We spent no more time that necessary to snap a few pictures, marking the end of our 46er conquest. A year and a half of hard labor and we were done! Summit time 1:50PM.

My 46er Finish on Skylight
I hiked from the Loj past Lake Arnold, up Gray, over to Skylight, and back over Marcy to the Loj. I loved the views from Skylight and the climb up the south face of Marcy. Great weather and route.

Slant Rock-Haystack-Skylight-Marcy-Slant Rock
Left Slant Rock to climb haystack, relax a bit and down to lake Tears of the cloud to do a rapid ascent-descent of Skylight (missed it last year when doing Gray). We then went on to climbed Marcy. We had the summit to ourselves and the stewart. Super day. We climbed down to Slant Rock.

A beautiful open summit with spectacular views of Marcy. Hit it up after topping out her big sister. It is too bad this peak is often over looked, or is it? #20

From Slant Rock
Conditions were ensuring my snails pace on this trip. After descending Marcy, I decided to head up to Skylight. Very glad that I did; for an unassuming climb, it has a beautiful summit!

a great summer day
I went up the trail to Lake Arnold, then to Feldspar, and up to Lake Tear of the Clouds. Along the way I tripped once and poked myself in the face with a trekking pole, and sank into some really deep mud twice. But hey that's the Adirondacks for you. I enjoyed the views from Skylight. A LOT of people were hiking from the Loj to various destinations on a perfect day weather wise, and it was the Sunday before Labor Day.
