Denny Gulch
This was my first climb of Yale. It was via Denny Gulch. This was the route featured in "A Climbing Guide to Colorado's Fourteeners" by Borneman & Lampert before it was closed for environmental concerns. The standard route became Denny CREEK a little to the west.

Southwest Slopes
Hiked the Southwest Slopes from Denny Creek Trailhead. Jogged most of the way back to the trailhead. Why? I was reading about the Mighty Mountain Mega Marathon and was trying to "get a good time." I've grown up since then.
Wow, a great physical challenge on a beautiful summer day...

Denny Creek Route
Went with a friend while there was still a bit of snow on top of Yale. Wanted to see how I could handle another 14er after Bierstadt-Sawtooth-Evans the day before. Felt pretty good, especially with the glissade/plunge-stepping for about 800-1000ft of elevation loss on the way down.
Climbed with my Dad. One of the best maintained trails I've ever seen. It was a highway climbing up and down though, but still good views of the rest of the Sawatch.
Left the Denny Creek Trailhead near 3am, gained the summit ridge right at daybreak. Perfect timing, but brr! Should have dressed warmer! Pretty steep trail, really fun summit ridge, and great views.

Visiting the 14ers
We were in the area intending to climb Quandary Peak but the logistics didn't work out. Mount Yale looked accessible and doable...so we did. Is it less crowded not on a weekend?

Good winter climb. Windy and cold above treeline. Awesome views from the summit.

Summit boulders scary
Left Denny creek TR at 6:15am. Lite snow covered switchbacks on trail to summit ridge. It is nice to be able to follow a more experienced climber who passes you! Right side of summit ridge gets my vote. Summit 11:35AM
Tried this mountain last year, but weather kicked us off. Not this time. Complete opposite weather compared to last year. Clear skies forever. We could see Pikes and Snowmass from up top. Im so pumped that we finally did it.

Perfect Day on Yale
Could not have asked for a better day! A little breezy on the summit ridge, but still great!

Yale
One of the shorter Sawatch range 14'ers hikes, but one of the most impressive looking. Some snow on the ascent, but most could be avoided. A nice combo of plunge-stepping and glissading from about 13,700 to 13,000 eased the descent a bit. Snow did not soften much so ice axe recommended. Runout was rocky in places.

Snow & Thunder
First 14er of the year. I ascended the Southwest Slopes for Denny Creek. The trail was hard to follow on account of all the snow. Especially above tree line, but it was easy to make your own route. I made a direct shot for the summit @ approximately 13,000' up a small couloir (with crampons & axe). At the summit the weather was great except for the building thunder storms (10:30am). They built faster than I expected and I had to hall ass off the summit. A great one day spring hike!!!

Via Southwest Slopes
A pleasant hike to an impressive looking peak. We managed to descend below the treeline before it started to rain and thunder. To my surprise, many people were still heading up at that time. The slideshow from our day up there is here: Mount Yale via southwest Slopes
