Along the Brighton Ridge
Along the way on an East to West Brighton ridge run.
Did a double traverse today. When up a VERY STEEP nontraditional route to Pioneer Peak and Sunset Peak. I started out following the Lake Mary/Catherine Pass Trail at Brighton Ski Resort. One I started to pass Lake Martha, the trail switch backed to the east a little. At the top of this switchback between Lake Martha and Lake Catherine, is where I left the trail and met the ridge that divides the Catherine Pass and Dog Lake area. Once off the trail, I followed a very faint game trail along the ridge. About 150 feet below the top of the ridge (with Pioneer Peak a couple hundred feet to my west), a narrow and STEEP grass and scree covered slope taunts in front. This was my favorite part of the route. Once on the Summit of Pioneer Peak, one has incredible views of the surrounding peaks. Sunset Peak is WSW about .8 to .9 miles from the summit of Pioneer. Descend to the saddle, and follow the well defined trail to the summit of Sunset. I chose to do these peaks in reverse order. Pioneer first, Sunset second. It was incredible. I highly recommend this route.

Snow, Cloud, Cliff, Avalanche
It looked like there was a storm up there, so naturally I went up. The clouds parted and revealed an awesome view. I also saw an avalanche. It was cool. Then I got cliffed out. That was not cool. Eventually made it back with cold and wet feet but the view was definitely worth it.

Smokey lungs
Albion>Catherine Pass>Sunset>Pioneer.
After running earlier in the week, my lungs were feeling the affects of the smoke. Great after work jaunt. Sad to see Lake Mary so low. Hoping for a better snow year.

via Albion Basin
Went up via Albion Basin and hit Sunset on the way there & back. Lake Mary was bone dry, and the air was full of smoke from the CA fires. What a sad sight.
I hit Sunset this morning with my daughter and saw the same thing... the haze I could handle but Lake Mary is practically gone. It's too bad.

Lazy Hike
Took a couple of beginners up this hike on a Sunday afternoon. It's almost November and I still had on my sleeveless shirt.
We went up to the top of the ski left and hit the ridge going west. The trail is in decent shape all the way to the top.

7/28/13 - Ridge run from Clayton to Sunset Peak. Great loop, saw multiple moose of all types. Trip report
6/23/13 - Along the ridge from Catherine Pass. Tried to drop down from the Sunset/Pioneer saddle but it was too steep and had to go back over Sunset to get back to the car
Climbed this in the winter with snow shoes. It was a tough climb with so much snow and the sweat from the climb froze on the way back down.

Kinda windy at the top of Pioneer. Hit Sunset Peak first then walked the ridge to Pioneer. The ridge walk looked a lot steeper than it actually was. A pleasant hike, and great views!
