My first San Juan peak - a great hike! Noticed in looking at my photos afterwards that the summit looked a little like those photos from Mars, what with the rocks being so red and all!

Silver Creek
We got an early start at 4:15 and summited just after sunrise, then on to Sunshine. This was my first time climbing in the San Juans and I loved it.
Climbed twice in the late '90's early '00's; once in a summer snow fall (kinda nice), once linked with Sunshine.

Redcloud-Sunshine Ski Traverse
Hiked, then skinned, then bootpacked, then skinned again to the summit in just over 4 hours. Skied the S ridge to the Redcloud-Sunshine saddle, ending with an icy double fall line slope with severe exposure. A fun piece of skiing on the way to the main objective: Sunshine's N face.

Weather uncooperative, LUCKY to summit!
Storms (thunder/lightening) kept us awake much of the night before our climb. Our planned start for a duo 14er day was not looking good...4am, 6am, still lightening/rain/snow. Finally, 8am people crawled out of their hiding places and hit the trail in an attempt. 10am, we all ducked out another lightening storm (just below tree-line). Many turned around, we pressed on. Upon reaching the saddle, a mere 25 minutes away, the storms tried their mercy again. The "brave/stupid?" 4 of us ducked out, and 30 min later took a small window of freedom to dash the summit. Were we out of lady luck? We headed towards Sunshine- running... upon reaching the saddle, that aweful crack of thunder sounded. We bailed out hard and fast down the North slopes, skirting far south before descending, knowing of the "dangerous cliff bands" below that saddle. We were down in no time as the storms subsided. Probably not the smartest decision-making we've done, but this having been my 32nd summit, we somehow felt safe enough for at least Redcloud... thank you Lord!

Standard combo with Sunshine
Remember the trail to from Redcloud to Sunshine is a lot farther than it looks! Passed people coming up at 2 PM with big storm clouds overhead.
Got a late start from Silver Creek trailhead at 9.49.
Trying to beat storms (which I didn’t- rain [fortunately no lightning] caught me about halfway up the ridge from the saddle), summited at 12.16. Passed a Texas father-son team before trail got steep, & a ~12 person teenage girl squad (& 1 20-something guy) about halfway up the ridge (who made it up after I did).
Left summit at 12.27, meeting my dad halfway down ridge. He continued up while I went down to my mom, who amazingly was almost at the saddle by that point. Went down & met up w/ her & made it to the summit, intercepting my dad ~200’ from the top. We all made it to the summit at 14.15. What a great feeling to be up on a 14er with both of them!
Made it back to the car by 16.53, encountering frequent yet soft rains on the way back. Returned to Little Texas (Lake City) & had a pizza at Poker Alice’s.
Slow progress and late start caused a late summit. Weather was moving in and lightning struck the area as I began to traverse to Sunshine. Retreated down to the ridge at 13,000 ft. as weather was clearing. Live to climb another day.

29 Apr 2006 - From Sunshine/Northeast Face
Continued from Sunshine after skiing its NE Face. An easy ski along the ridge, although the winds on top of Redcloud were around 40-50mph. The snow wasn't quite as nice on the NE Face of Redcloud, but made for a mellow descent. We were able to stay on skis until reaching the South Fork of Silver Creek and hiked it out from there to the TH. Bikes made the 4x4 rd back to the road closure go quick! Back to the cars at 4:00pm, 11.5 hr day. With B. Kalet.
