Climbed the standard route with some people from work (including a first timer!). Got rained on coming back down, and got to see a cattle drive on the road. Gotta love a 14er where the cows outnumber the people!

From Stewart Creek
The wilderness around this area is worth the long drive to get there. We started a bit late but still made the summit by around noon.

Started up late in the evening hoping to bivy on the summit, came up short and stopped at 13,850 feet according to my GPS. Watched the sunrise from the summit.

Drove into the trailhead the night before and slept it the back of my Pathfinder. A family came to summit while I was up, the father was finishing the 14’ers and save it for last so he could have his family with him. Took lots of photos for them, very cool.

Climbed up and down the West slopes. Fresh snow the night before, and another snowstorm caught us on the summit. Great fun !!!

The bugs were terrible. Unfortunately, I had to camp on a little spit of land near the beaver ponds. I burnt alot of greens to keep the smoke going. A hot day.
I saw my first moose the next day as I was hiking out.
Pointed a guy in the right direction as I was leaving the summit. I'll be back later this year to do Oregon peak.

I've climbed several San Juan peaks, but only this one had a true wilderness feel. Seeing a group of bull elk on a ridge silhouetted against the sunrise was the highlight and one of those wild moments of incontestable purity.
Well worth the drive! Spectacular trail with great scenery. Solo trip taking 2 hours and forty minutes to the summit. Back to the trailhead in four hours and 35 minutes.

Awesome hike. Beautiful trail. 41st 14er for me 46th for my husband! Took 2 1/2 hours to summit and 2 hours down. This was a pleasant day after climbing North Maroon!!!!! Highly recommended!!!!!

This is probably one of my favorite 14ers. The La Garita mountains offer a solitude that is almost unmatched in the heavily traveled backcountry of Colorado.

One of the nicest hikes I've done in this state. This was my first time in the La Garitas and it lived up to all my expectations. I didn't see as much wildlife as I would have liked but the lack of people and the views more than made up for it.
Took about 4 hours to reach the summit and then we took a leisurely pace on the way down.
Route Climbed: East Slopes Date Climbed: August 1996
This was my first fourteener, almost ten years ago. As I recall, it as a beautiful hike. We encountered a thunderstorm on the way down, and before we could get below timberline, the electricity in the air and the thunder got pretty intense--good times. One could spend weeks exploring this area.
