beautiful morning, nice observation tower
The drive from Greenville was a little foggy at times, with a blue sky mingling with the clouds for which the Smoky Mountains are famously named. The last stretch did involve some steep climbing for the car, so it is not for the poorly maintained vehicle, but there's a good parking lot and a brand new (April 2019) observation tower straddling the SC / NC state line. Very nice little scenic overlook!

A very warm day - Oct 3, 2019
Caught a Red Eye flight from SLC, UT to Greenville, SC, rented a car and drove right to Sassafras. I didn't know about the new summit platform that opened just this year (2019). I also didn't realized that the mountain was shared by NC and SC. Checked off US State Highpoint #25 in my quest to visit the highest point in each of the 50 US States. Half way there, but with all the one that require real hiking already checked off!

Sassafras - #1 on the epic road trip
My son and two nephews joined me on a 9 peak, 6 day journey. Sass mount was the first. We hiked 2.5 miles on the foothills trail, and summited in about 1.5 hours. Beautiful day - as always, it is a bit odd to see so many people just drive up to the top - but that was not for us. We need to hike to feel that we have properly "summitted." Great views, hiked back down on the road just for a different view (which was quite a bit longer, but fine). Fun day.
Arrived at the parking lot below the summit in the rain. Walking up to the new summit tower it began to pour. The new summit tower is exceptional - very nice. directions to the summit were spot on.

Highpoint # 16
Four of five in a highpoint and whiskey trail driving vacation. Hiked to the new tower via the Foothills trail under clear, sunny skies. What a great day!

Glorious day and glorious views
It was a picture postcard day. Just perfect. The views were just incredible...Got a chance to see the new observation deck. It was very well done. I liked the demarcation line showing North and South Carolina.

Sassafras ('18)
Second state highpoint, hiked the day after Mitchell. Had to stealth over the fence and onto the highest dirt mound I could find. Pretty area, no views from up top but some nice views from the nearby overlook. The new summit structure should be cool, wait to hike this until it's done. I also recommend nearby Hooker Falls, it's super cool. Good peak, would recommend
Drive up to the SC part, but still got construction of the summit tower going on in the NC side.

Summited before all the construction for the lookout tower began. You can see a mountain that is clearly higher from the top, which is over the NC border, but still great views nonetheless!

Rainy summit
Summit was closed when there. Went up a trail in the pouring rain. Not fun. No view due to fog.
Drove up to the top, the summit area is currently closed due to construction on a new tower at the summit. The summit marker has been moved to right outside the fenced construction area
