Wanda Rutkiewicz

was a most forceful, determined person and lady-mountaineer. In re-cognition of her numerous contributions to feminine mountaineering she received many awards and distinctions, including the prestigious Sitara-e Imtiaz (Star of Distinction) award of Pakistan.

Re: Wanda Rutkiewicz

thank you Azfal for your info..
By the way in 1982 Wanda was a member of women's K2 expedition. The 12-member Polish-French all-women's (no high altitude porters). They failed due to bad weather conditions then, but she wrote many warm words about Pakistan. This is a part of her interview:"The interest in our women's expedition as something unknown was large and we were welcomed with great friendliness. It had occurred to us that a group of mountain climbers consisting only of women might well be met with suspicion or intolerance in this Mohammedan country where a woman's place in public life is completely different than in Western countries. But we were hospitably welcomed and our customs were treated with respect"
