Winter wonderland!   Sucess!

My first true winter hike at elevation in over a decade, and it was magical! Fresh fallen snow everywhere made up for no views (again). All my gear held up and kept me warm. Didn't need spikes or snowshoes yet though. Next time!

In the rain and fog  Sucess!

Last of the Catskill peak list. Two hours and ten minutes up an excellent trail (fairly dry considering how rainy it was) from the Spruceton Road TH (with much chatting on the way) and ninety minutes back down. Zero views but the 3500 list is now complete.

Election Day  Sucess!

Wonderful fall day played hookie from work and escaped election coverage. Lots of fallen leaves made devils path a little trickier for footing but overall very pleasant only saw two folks for less than minute whole day.

Long Loop  Sucess!

Parked at the end of the Devil’s Path on Spruceton Road and hiked along Spruceton Road to its terminus and the start of the blue blazed Diamond Notch Trail, which I followed to its junction with the Devil’s Path. I put the crampons on at Diamond Notch Falls and ascended to the summit of West Kill, stopping just before the summit to take in the view from Buck Ridge Lookout. It was a beautiful, cloudless day with the temperature around 50°. The view over Hunter and Plateau was gorgeous, with the Black Dome Range visible to the north, and even Windham High Peak visible just to the west of the Camel Hump. Wittenberg, Cornell and Slide could just be made out from the vantage point offered. I met two other 3500 Club aspirants at the lookout. The snow was still several feet deep above 3500’, and I postholed a few times traversing the ridge. By the time I reached the ascent up St. Anne’s Peak I was feeling the burn. The Ascent down was long and tiring, and much to my surprise the Devil’s Path was very poorly marked in many places past the summit of West Kill towards St. Anne’s Peak. I kept the crampons on until I reached the sharp bend in the Devil’s Path in Mink Hollow. Returned to the car in just over eight hours.

Hiked in from Spruceton RD TH past Diamond Notch Falls. Buck Ridge views were great, enjoyed lunch on the ledge, rain held off until we got back to the falls.

I am sick to death  Sucess!

On the roster sheet that one sends in to the 3500' club for membership are two questions that asks the aspirant to indicate their perference for favorite and least favorite peak climbed. Two ludacris questions as far as I am concerned as they are all favorites. But, like a good aspirant I answer them and as I am sick with a nasty head cold for this peak, it gets my least fav vote. I liked the ridge walk over to St. Ann. That hike is called "Westkill End to End".

Westkill  Sucess!

Climbed via the Diamond Notch Trail from Spruceton. An easy late summer hike. The waterfalls seen during the first mile of the hike were beautiful. Although there wasn't much to see from the summit, the excellent Buck Ridge lookout afforded some great views of the Blackhead Range and nearby Hunter Mountain.

Took the Diamond Notch trail to Devil's Path  Sucess!

I went on a nice spring day. The only problem was when I got to Buck Ridge the sun was shining way too brightly facing me. I couldn't get the photos I wanted from there. Diamond Notch Falls is pretty.
