Route Climbed: Jeep Road Date Climbed: Oct. 14, 2005
Spent night in truck getting acclimated (frost on inside of windshield in morning). Great trail and relatively gentile climb to top. Weather on top at 1:00 PM in mid 40s with 5-10 MPH wind and clear skies. The view from the top almost as good as the view from Mount Whitney. Hiking time 8 hours. A great peak to hike in October.

Solo. First time getting sick at altitude. Had to nap halfway. Almost vomitted. Took 9.5 hours to summit and almost got caught in a violent electrical storm. Came back to a dead battery. Got help from a guy who just pulled in as I got back to the TH.

Afternoon weather cooperated and I went up-- easy way to get to top of Great Basin but welcome after Yosemite. Take care on the road. Any regular car can make it all the way, but I saw an off-road edition Toyota Tacoma with a flat while I drove by (after offering help) in a convertible Mustang. Speed can kill your tires here; not much else can.

There were several other parties hiking this route the day I was there. Great views from the summit! Best view was sunrise as I drove to the trailhead!!
Route Climbed: Access Road via the Research Campus Date Climbed: August 21, 2004
We took Mountain Bikes. The way up consisted of pedal-walk-pedal-walk-fix flat, pedal-walk-walk-walk. We had good weather all day and great views from the top. The descent was a blast!
A beautiful solo hike, with lots of alpine wildflowers. Freezing up top...I felt compelled to climb to the top of the building at the summit. I sat and stared at the great eastern escarpment of the Sierra...
Simple, easy 14er. Did it in shorts, down jacket, hat, gloves and trail runners. Got the oddest looks from people because I was in shorts, everyone made a comment. Wind was whipping but an easy up down. My buddy tagged along and got his first 14er so congratulations to him. Had fun but way too long.

Got my first 14er on sunday September 4th Breathtaking! Did get to cheat a little. The Brancroft research center was having an open house so the gate was open which led to probably more than average visitors for one day. The bristlecones are awesome too. Plan to return!

Beautiful hike this last Saturday, and we were so happy to finally make this summit (I had to turn around last time I tried 19 years ago!). Surprisingly busy on the trail (~15 hikers + ~7 bikers). Road to the trailhead was rougher than usual due to a heavy snow year. Trail was almost totally free of snow except for the last saddle before the peak. Perfect weather, no clouds and quite cool (needed gloves & a warm hat). And a wonderful surprise on the way down was the chance to see ~10 bighorn sheep grazing just 25 feet away from us on the side of the trail. Amazing!
Barcroft open house - first 14'er - great up. Serious lightning and hail all the way back turned the entire route white - could see the sun shining down in Bishop. Looked fine going in but after 20 min on summit, storm developed surprisingly fast. Astounding views of the Sierra.
Open house day! Mother nature wouldnt let it be a gimmie tho, and pelted us with hail for a solid hour from the summit down. A little sketch with the lightening.
