Loved the ice palace at the top. The summit lodge was totally deserted, and completely covered in rime ice. It was surreal, like something out of a fantasy.
Have done Whiteface several times, most notable time was canoing to from a friends house on Lake Placid and hiking it then canoing back, long day!

My Buddy's 46th
Took the trail from Connery Pond to Whiteface Landing, then on up. About halfway we bushwhacked to the top of the brook, and hiked/climbed the slide all the way up. It was tough in spot due to wet rocks, and my advice is to stay to the left when it looks like there are two slides. The headwall was intimidating, but our fearless leader took his 46th in style, right over the front of it, leaving me down below shaking in my boots. If you go to the right it's not too bad, but not easy either.
Sherpa Chris and Sarah joined in, and as is custom, we celebrated with UBU ales at the LPPB.
This was #14 for me.

Whiteface
Did this one with my parents and brother when I was 13 years old. Don't remember much about it, except on the hike down my Mom was thinking the best way down would have been to roll down!
Revamped my post from stating that I drove to the top in 2002. Now I have actually climbed it via the Wilmington Trail from the Science Center. The top was pretty fogged over, but there were some slight views to Esther Peak, but nothing toward Lake Placid. Also, a very hot day.

Paddle and Climb
Took the family canoe from Paradox Bay on Lake Placid. Foggy morning and COLD (for August) on the trail. Fearing hypothermia, the only reason that I kept going was because the structures on top were closer. Continued to Esther. The clouds broke on the way back from Esther, making for nice view from Whiteface on the return. Sunny skies for the paddle back. Whiteface sure looks impressive from the North end of Lake Placid.
I admit that we cheated and took the elevator back up from Esther. Lame.

Wilmington & Auto Road
Tough hike in DEEP snow!! Took longer than expected, but we made it to the top and I snowshoed down the auto road while the others skied down. Cleared off enough for great views from the top. Windy and cold! Thanks Paul & Rick!! : )

Wow, I love this mountain!
Almost didn't make it after breaking trail in knee to waist deep snow for five hours... We turned around about 1 mile from the summit and right then, the dudes from the lean-to came up and started to break trail! it was awesome. at this point we turned back around and made it! thanks to the dudes in the lean-to!
Took seven hours to summit to go four miles!
climbed from the south from the Whiteface Landing on Lake Placid, awesome trail but seldom used.
Temps on summit were 5 degrees with about 30 mph winds -20 wind chill
My fifth winter summit!

Ice and snow
Great hike from Atmostpheric Research Center with Dave Ryan, up Whiteface and tagged Esther on the way back. No tourists, just us and a couple other groups of hikers. Took the trail all the way up; took the stairs and road loop back to the trail on the descent.

From Wilmington
Climbed this one in a snow and wind storm. You could barely keep your footing due to the high winds (Mount Washington recorded wind gusts over 150 mph that day). That night as I relaxed in my RV, two trees came crashing down on it and did significant damage.
We made it, but we couldn't see anything at the top; it was too foggy.

Willmington trail in the snow
Could hardly find the trail for the fresh snow and white trail markers on the trees. Great and tough hike on snowshoes

Connery pond and brook slide
Started out at route 86 and had to hike to the connery pond trail then bushwhacked to brook slide to summit. descended connery pond trail from summit, it was poorly marked but a good trail.fun hike
Climbed from nostandard side coming up the steep boulders from Lake Placid direction. Long 18ish mile day if I remember right solo + Dog, descended via Willmington train, skipped Ester for the time being due to the puppy.
This was my first DAK hike_ i did it with school group before school started_ good experience gave me a feel for what the Daks had to offer_ i took the Wilmington trail_ took most of the day_the firs part of the trail was the worst_hiking up a steep rocky stream_ good hike but would have been better without the slow hikers_
