Great shotAwesome capture. Since seeing lava ooze myself, I have always felt that one of man's best ways to feel connected to the world is watch it unfold in front of your eyes. Truly amazing.

How big is this blob?Ballpark? And how far away were you?

Re: How big is this blob?I don't remember how far away exactly I was on this particular shot, but maybe about six feet. For instance, this photo was taken from about four feet. The lava was oozing into a shallow depression just beyond my feet.

Re: How big is this blob?I guess I should try to estimate the size of this thing, since that's what you asked. I'd say the girth of this lava blob (left to right) was about two feet.

Re: How big is this blob?Interesting that you could get within 6 ft of something 2000 degrees. You must have felt the heat!

Re: How big is this blob? There were many people standing around the oozing lava. It's what people do for entertainment there, apparently. It's more interesting to watch rock dry than paint.
Yep, you can feel the heat so you can't stay too close too long. I was also concerned about melting my camera case. Typically, to get these shots you either have to have a tripod with a trigger cord or use a timer and set the camera on a rock.
What is odd about this lava is you look at it and think it's like a liquid. But if you throw a pebble at even the bright orange stuff, it bounces off.

Re: How big is this blob?He he. For some reason that reminds me of a great line from the 1st 'Alien' movie:
"It's structural perfection is matched only by it's hostility.'
