Awesome!...and rather scary-looking! Did you ever find yourself in the middle of one of those on your hikes?

Re: Awesome!Only once or twice. In the the National Parks they warn all hikers and campers to be below the treeline before storms come and I follow that rule!
My worst thunderstorm experience was in 2002 in Maine on a canoe trip right after we pulled in to shore on a big lake. The winds were so strong they blew the flames out in our lanterns and stoves and then blew our tarp down. Then it got so dark we couldn't even see beyond our hands. It stormed hard for three hours and then we finally ate at 9:00 o'clock and went to bed. Really scary to be in a summer storm when you're in the far northern backwoods with no civilization for 20 miles or more!
