Re: Wow!In my back pocket!
Actually it was the best of a really enjoyable 4 day Labor Day weekend. Managed to climb 9 peaks including Charybdis during the trip... it took me two weeks to recover!
Thanks Marc!

Superb!Surrounded by giants- one of the hidden gems of the Sierra. When's the trip report, mrchad? :-)

Re: Superb!Yeah... this remote area was on my to-do list for a long time. Ionian Basin met high expectations.
I don't know if I have time for a trip repost, but I suppose it's worth considering ;-) Actually I did get into some sketchy conditions coming down the east side of Mount Huxley, was too far to the north (I'd ascended the west). I was way too stubborn to climb up and after several progressively difficult moves with a full pack I ran into a dead end 20 feet above the talus. I actually considered throwing my pack down and jumping onto it... for far too long. More sketchy moves continued and body recovery was averted.
Thanks Gordon!

Re: Superb!Yeah, those 'what ifs' can really slow down a mountaineers progress, but 20 feet does seem like a long drop even onto a soft pack.
I'll give you a 9/10 for this 'mini TR'. For a 10/10, I'll need to see more pictures. ;-)

Charybdis ...In Greek mythology, Charybdis was once the daughter of Poseidon, assuming the form of a huge bladder of a creature whose face is all mouth and whose arms and legs are flippers ...
Hmmm, it all sounds Greek to me. Nice picture!

Re: Charybdis ...Well I didn't see Charybdis, Poseidon, or even a mermaid. I'd have offered her some Mountain House, but I struck out.
Thanks lcarreau!

Re: Pretty peak!Very remote feeling there too. Gotta like an area where even the largest lakes are unnamed!

Re: Out fricking standing!Thank you Noondueler. Being in the right place at the right time with a point and shoot works wonders. It helps to be exposed to the backcountry a lot too!

Ionian BasinI regret I never made this trip! I'd think this is one of the most remote areas in the Sierra high country--along with Kaweah Basin.

Re: Ionian BasinI agree. Beautiful spot and dozens of unnamed lakes in every direction!
