Walked up to the glacier!  Sucess!

Beautiful sunny day with some tour buses at the Icefields Centre. After eating the lunches we packed from Canmore I hiked up the short trail from the tarn-side parking lot to the glacial tongue. There are several signs along the way marking the points where the glacier reached at various years so you get the feel of how time and climate are racing to end this glacier.

At the top you find a rushing stream and roped off warnings to stay away from the glacier itself but that didn't stop several people from venturing down to the very edge. You can actually feel a chilled breeze coming down from the ice and see several crevasses up higher.

Well worth the 30 minutes or so to hike up and back but I would not pay the $60 or so to ride up the dusty road in the caterpillar vehicle, step out on the glacier, get back in and come down. If I ever come back I would pay for a guided hike up higher on the glacier itself!
