Eastern Black Swallowtail and Fly Poison in Shenandoah

An Eastern Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes) alights on a Fly Poison flower (Amianthium muscitoxicum) along the AT in Shenandoah National Park, VA. The Fly Poison has that name because a toxin in the bulb, when crushed with sugar, is used to poison flies. It is also dangerous to livestock. Imaged in June 2004.
