"As an adolescent I aspired to lasting fame, I craved factual certainty, and I thirsted for a meaningful vision of human life - so I became a scientist. This is like becoming an archbishop so you can meet girls."

Journey better than the viewDrive to trailhead was long and bumpy enough to keep company to a minimum - only 3 other parties on a blue-sky day and I had the summit to myself. Wind and haze made the valley views I'd long sought rather anticlimactic. Looking over the DNWR, however, was lovely.

First peak on the North side of the ValleyMaddie and I finally got a Subie and some clearance, so we gave this one a try. Really cool trail, and it was in better condition than I expected it to be. It was strange to see Vegas from the North, after climbing so much on the other sides of the valley, but what a view!

A bit warm!I did Gass in the afternoon after a long drive from Phoenix the day before doing Hayford. The drive in took longer than I thought. Nice views.

Easter hikeHiked up on a beautiful, hot Easter morning. Great visibility, and very peaceful out in the desert. I had to (unfortunately) rent a high-clearance vehicle for the day just to get to the trailhead, but it was well worth it.

Northern Ridge TrailCrappy visibility in the Vegas valley- probably should have waited till the air quality was better to do this one. Route was easier than I was expecting.
Pics and commentary here.

Unheralded summitFollowed the north route, no difficulties at all. Four hours r/t, including stops and summit break. Stunning weather: near-zero humidity, 150-mile views, cool, slight breeze. A great little half-day hike for a nice "little" peak. My trip report

1.5 Hrs1.5 hrs up the standard route. Neat views of the city and surrounding peaks from the top. Good route for a quick fix outside of the city.

climbed from SouthClimbed from South (North end of Decatur). Took little over 5 hours to go up, because I had to check the GPS route all the way and Geocaching. I think I can make it in 4.5 hours next time. It was about 8.5 miles and more than 5,100 ft elevation gain for only one way up.
Fortunately, I met one guy at the peak and went down from North with him. (He gave me a ride back to my car)

Standard RouteMy friend Bob and I climbed this little peak today. Took us a couple hours going up and about one and a half coming down.
Great weather out there today. There were a couple police choppers coming and going from the summit all day today. Perhaps they were doing some type of maintenance?

Route Climbed: NorthernI climbed this one from the north with my wife a friend and his two daughters. This was his first summit with his girls and they did great despite a windy summit. 5 and 7 years old, where do they get the energy? We took the service road past the parking area to shave a couple miles off for the girls. The rangers were out this weekend though and those four miles cost us $175. They've never ticketed us before, but at that cost they won't again either!

Good conditionsThe roads are in good shape leading out to Gass Peak. High clearance recommended, without high clearance your trailhead drive time will be substantially increased.
