"After the first glass, you see things as you wish they were. After the second, you see things as they are not. Finally, you see things as they really are, which is the most horrible thing in the world."

Nice Area!Starting from the Kennedy Meadows Resort, we went off trail from the launch meadow trail just before the confluence of the Summit creek. We camped north of Ridge Lake. The next day we went East toward the upper Lewis Lake and then climbed up the slope to the plateau. The rest is an easy hiking West toward the summit of Granite Dome. I circumvented the upper Lewis Lake counter-clockwise on my way down. Surrounded by granite walls with some small sandy beaches & a gorgeous water color the upper Lewis Lake was the most beautiful among the lakes I saw there. The weather was almost perfect except occasional high wind during the night.

crazy geologyHiked up to the summit on a nice summer day; I loved the transition from granite slabs to volcanic rubble in NE Emigrant one can see from the top.

Looped SE from Ridge LakeA fairly easy climb, but made tougher by hauling full backpacking packs up and over the mountain. Flat summit pretty freaky - reminded me of Half Dome for some reason.

Hiked up from the west sideThe trip up was a fun day hike from camping along the small lakes on the western side of the dome with various granite slabs, alpine meadows with wildflowers, and barren scree slopes along the way.

Route Climbed: From Upper Lewis Lake Date Climbed: September 3 2005Hiked in from Silver Mine trailhead. The jeep trail to the trailhead is rugged. Base camped at Iceland Lake. Pretty lake but no fish. Caught a few Brook trout in Upper Lewis Lake. The route from Upper Lewis Lake wasn't too difficult. Great views, well worth the climb.

Route Climbed: Southern Route Date Climbed: August 16, 2003Camped at Wilson Meadow Lake and followed the route north as decribed in Ben Schifrin's Emigrant guidebook. It was a clear day and the views into Yosemite, Emigrant and Carson Iceberg were awesome! There were some fires near Pinecrest, but they did not affect the views.
