Pleasant warm winter day to be out. Mountain views were great and the basin was a bit hazy. Upper road still icy but navigable. Colby canyon is always worth the effort.

Gorgeous views from top
via Colby Canyon; sunny day; snow on the upper portion of the fire road; great 360 degrees views over San Gabriels and LA Basin.
The weather was stormy and the clouds were moving fast so it was beautiful but the trail's pretty boring. The peak was nice. I recommend mountain biking it.
I have a particular attraction to Josephine Peak and have hiked to the top 213 times. I have hiked in every month and in every kind of weather. My favorite times are when there is a marine layer over the L.A. basin and it seems like you're walking on clouds. During May & June, the Spanish Broom emit an intoxicating, beautiful smell that permeates the whole area. Also, during June, you can count on running across rattlesnakes, although the wide fire road allows safe passage around them. This last October was the first time I have ever seen a tarantula up there. I like this trail because many times I am hiking alone, and there are always people on the trail in case of emergency. My first time hiking this trail was in the 70's, so my 213 times have been spread out over the years.

Josephine Peak
This 8 mile round trip route up the Colby Canyon Trail and to the peak is always a good little workout if you're pressed for time. I've also run this route a few times and have also biked to the peak up from the Josephine Fire Road. Today, our group started out with Josephine, went to Strawberry, then to Mt. Lawlor, and then back to the Colby Canyon Trailhead via Strawberry Potrero and the Colby Canyon Trail around the north face of Strawberry.
My friend kelly and i climbed up colby canyon the saddle then over the ridge, thus avoiding the long fireroad. amazing day of dense cloud cover. loved the summit , one of my favorite new peaks.

An unseasonably warm day. Yesterday the Santa Anas blew most of the crap out to sea, leaving reasonably clear air. Views to Catalina and San Jacinto. Not bad! Once on top, I wished I'd brought my mountain bike.
