WE hiked up the Y-bar trail, which was in surprisingly good condition, to the saddle and then up the SE ridge to the top. The mile from the saddle to the top was probably the toughest mile I ever did. Overall this made for a longer day than I expected.

long day
Drove to the Barnhardt Trail, and my buddy's Chevy Tahoe got stuck once in the thick mud. Camped at the trail and then hiked the next morning on Barnhardt Trail. With over a foot of snow we did not find Suicide Ridge and continued on Barnhardt for too long. We then just went up a ridge and trudged in snow to the summit and descended via Suicide Ridge. Long day, particularly because of the bad route. 11 hour day and 11 miles.

Manzanita Peak
Hiked Mazatzal in a long day out of Tucson.
Came in on Barnhardt Trail, and bushwacked through
a rough patch of Manzanita enroute to the top.
Wussed out on the gamble of a rough shortcut down to
Shake Tree trail.

South Ridge: Y-Bar to Cactus Saddle
What a steep, rugged, brush-covered amazingly fun viewpoint right in the heart of central AZ. Even the Y-Bar Trail itself was somewhat rugged due to forest fire damage. Then, turn right and go up! The pine forest on top felt great.
Hiked the Y-bar basin/Barnhardt canyon Loop and had a great view of Mazatzal peak. Maybe next time I'll be ambitous enough for a bush-wacking expedition to the summit.
