Overview
The route primarily follows the long western ridge leading up to Methodist Mountain summit.
Getting There
Drive south on 285 for 5.3 miles from Poncha Springs. There will be a large pull-off for the Rainbow Trail on the west side of the road. There is also some parking on the east side of the road.
Route Description
Hike east on the Rainbow Trail. About one mile into the hike, a powerline crosses the hillside to your left. Leave the trail and head up to the powerline. At the highest power pole, head up the steep hillside to attain the ridge (this steep hillside is the worst part of the hike). Follow the ridge to the summit. The ridge passes through some nice aspen groves, a few clearings and some pine forest. Minimal deadfall was encountered.
Return via the same path. The total distance is about 6 miles each way.
Note: there are several minor knobs along the ridge that can be bypassed to reduce elevation gain. Most of this route is off-trail.
