Mikeno and Karisimbi

Mont Mikeno (4427m/14,524') and Volcan Karisimbi (4507m/14,787') in a dawn view from the rim of Mt. Nyiragongo, Democratic Republic of Congo, September 2017. According to local information, Mikeno seems to have been climbed only once in the last three decades, because of a multiday bushwhack approach followed by high-angle moss-climbing (DRC security concerns have also been a factor at times, although they don't seem to be the main deterrent to climbing in the last few years). Karisimbi is an easily-arranged, nontechnical, two-day ascent from the Rwanda side.
