Re: Oha!Yes, you can directly tell, how much effort it was to create this road. On the other hand - it is so narrow that you can only drive it up or down very early or very late in the day. Otherwise it takes 2h with all the traffic.

Re: Oha!I don't remember it be so narrow, if it's the main road on Stilfser Joch. But we had bad weather. I only remember cyclists, leaning by the side of the road on traffic signs or walls, warming their hands below whatever they had dressed at that time.

Re: Oha!Oh yes, it is narrow. You can teall, each time a truck comes up. When we were there they were repairing the road almost on top of the ramp. It was nearly impossible to pass the construction...

Re: Oha!Narrow or not, my wife drove the 48 hairpin bends/1200 m (3600 ft.) down from the top to Trafoi in 40 minutes in July 1993, and yes, there were some ongoing repairs to the road, and snow in both sides!
One of the best photos I have seen of the road, by the way.

Re: Oha!Funny discussion - yes I drove it up in about the same amount of time early in the morning before 8. But when returning at 5 p.m. it took forever. There are just too many people who don't know how to drive mountain roads and if they meet in one of the switchbacks you'll witness some very interesting maneuvers. All I wanted to say is that next time around I would use the road from Umbrailpass to go down to Santa Maria and from there to Vinschgau rather than creeping down the 48 switchbacks.
