Nice dayhike, but my feet ate it. Ditched plans to attempt Langley the following day.

Full pack
Made the summit, with a full pack. Camped over Parker Pass to climb Koip and Kuna the day before. Didn't really think out a route in advance, wasn't sure where to drop my pack. Ended up hauling it up the south ridge and down the steep north ridge before dropping it at the Dana/Gibbs saddle to climb Dana, then hiked out.

Skiing in cement
Tried to get up via the V-chute to the Cocaine Couloir, Only made it to the top of the V, fell like 30 times on the way down. Better day for ice climbing indeed.
Up the NE ridge from Dana. Nice scrambling with enough snow to make it interesting.

Tagged only because its on the SPS list. Views of the Lyell glacier to the south redeem this peak. 3:30 car to car.

South Slopes Route
Started at Mono Pass TH before dawn, easy to follow trail to Mono pass, left trail just short of the pass and climbed up steep scree slope to ridgeline, followed occasional faint use trail. Backtracked down and continued on to Mount Lewis via Parker Pass. I think Mt Gibbs was more difficult then Mt Dana.

NE ridge from Dana
Traversed from Mt. Dana; nice bit of class 3 towards the top, otherwise a talus slog. Descended west slope back (seemingly never ending talus) to Mono Pass trailhead, and hoofed it on 120 back to Tioga Pass.
Excellent views and perfect weather.

South to North Traverse
Nice relaxing climb... maybe too relaxing. I fell asleep on top and woke up with a serious sunburn on my unprotected face (blisters! ouch!). I had used sunscreen that morning, but neglected to re-apply before my nap. That has never happened again!

Gibbs from the Mono Pass TH
A very nice peak, even though the never-ending talus is a little exhausting :) Also, we did go a little too far into the Mono Pass instead of starting off much earlier and climbing the W ridge, this would have been much faster.
Day-hiked Gibbs as a warm up for Mt Langley the next day. Left with Aj and Commando Tang from Mono Pass TH. Went off trail to ascend the West Ridge. Enjoyed a beer at the summit. Aj developed several blisters on this hike and abandoned attempt to do Langley the next day.

From Dana July 19 1997
Dropping down from the summit of Dana to the saddle below Gibbs I ascended a ridge to the summit. I was back to my car by 5:30 p.m. and back home in San Francisco by 11:30.

Route: South Ridge/Mono Pass TH (Ascent)/West Side (Descent)
Never got the memo that I was supposed to double bag Gibbs with Dana. I followed some crazy trail down the west side that must have been blazed by some gravity-defying yogic marmot.... thankfully, no one saw me "glissade" down the scree on my butt. Didn't see a register. Trail was empty - good that there was no one around to hear me singing the Bee Gees greatest hits as I climbed.

Dana-Gibbs Meal Deal
Took the "fun" route after summiting Mount Dana from the common saddle. Nice to hit some solid rock on the NE side (some not so solid) towards the summit after the gobs of loose rock and scree. Walked the long NW ridge down to the Mono Pass trail and walked back to Tioga Pass via the road. Good Whitney warmup hike.

Dana-Gibbs traverse
Stopped on Dana only long enough to sign the register (surprised to see one on Dana - had to sign the cover since it was so full), then proceeded on to Gibbs, then back to SR 120 and 3mi of road-walking back to Tioga Pass.
