Portal
Very difficult day hike. The switchbacks were icy and I did not have crampons. Departed portal at 3am did not return until 7pm, conditions made for a long day, but the summit always feels good.

HP #10
Second highest state highpoint and our 10th. We climbed it via the Mountaineer's Route with guide Howie and co-guest Kevin from LA. A nice summit day after a night at the Upper Boy Scout Lake with a few hours of sleep.

2nd Time's the Charm
Left Outpost Camp @ 2am, made the summit @ 8am. Colder than I expected after Trail Crest, but a good morning.
Though not my preferred style for my first time up Whitney, I have to admit that this trail is spectacular. You transition from the sanctuary of the Portal up through splendid meadows and finally up into the high granite ramparts of the Whitney Crest. The catwalk section of trail past Trail Crest is pretty cool. Not a dramatic summit but certainly a dramatic view.
After failing 3 times on winter attempts of the mountaineer's route, this one was egging at me. I decided to hike it at the last minute, so to avoid the lottery issue, I backpacked from Cottonwood Lakes (tagging Langley along the way) to the JMT, summitted from the West side, and descended the regular hiking trail on the East side. 4 days, 47 miles, and solo. Very happy!
Day-hiked the main trail, 12hrs / 11 minutes round trip. Great day!

Late Sept hike
Mt. Whitney Trail, 2 days with a camp at Trail Camp, 14.5h overall. Beautiful hike, Alp-like views, easier than expected if well acclimatized.

Last day of JMT
8:05 AM ascent from Guitar Lake to Muir Peak then Whitney summit by 10:15 with my 35 pound pack. Descend the Mountaineers route, seeing one other hiker. Finishing a successful two week completion of the John Muir Trail with a great but short day.
Hiked the Whitney Trail with my 17yr old son. Beautiful day to hike. My son who usually is a strong hiker struggled to the summit, but finished strong. I felt great all day and thought the trail was easier than what I had read.

More like hikers log
Used the Cottonwood Lakes and Whitney/Portal loop to acclimatize. An alpine start ensured my success. I would love to revisit the region when I have gained some scrambling skills (and partners with equal ability).
The end of HST (High Sierra Trail); also the easiest day - without the big pack! I don't think I have ever hiked that fast before - literally running... For the first time in my life, I past so many people (most likely day hikers coming straight up from the sea level) along the way...
My second 14er and I did it exactly the way I wanted it to be - via the "backdoor" a.k.a. HST. *^_^* Really good view with dramatic clouds and amazing lighting. ...couldn't have done it without my buddy. A perfect way to end an epic trip. =)

Awesome East Buttress
Excellent route. Climbed the Buttress from Iceberg Lake and desended the Mountaineers route. Two rope teams...Matt and Dave, and me and Jason. Fantastic lead Jason, and thanks Matt for navigating the Ebersbacher Ledges in moonlight. Thanks to Gab from Colorado for the Matte on the summit.

High Sierra Trail
Finished our 72 mile thru-hike of the High Sierra Trail, at the top of Mount Whintey. Perfect weather... cold and windy on the summit... and a long line of day hikers on their way up, as we headed back to the portal.

Alpine Style Assent with 40pound pack
This was the first time I have been on this beautiful mountain or at this altitude. Was not sure how my body was going to react but thankfully someone recommended easy to digest food which did the trick to stay strong.
Got many comments when people saw my pack and how visibly trying the climb was for me.
Can't wait to return and do this again. Worth all the planning ahead and permitting. Amazing trail maintenance and design!
I am in love!

Mt Whitney
Day hike from Whitney Portal, started on the trail at 3am. Full moon the entire way, hardly had to use headlamps. Beautiful sunrise. Everyone was healthy for the entire hike, wonderful day!
