Chucura  Sucess!

We (my kids Kessler (age 11) and Shaylee (age 9)) and I climbed on these peaks for acclimatization. We were with a guide on this trip since I went to Peru with just the kids and I.

We walked in some snow, but the weather was pretty good. The big volcanoes were all covered with clouds though. Shaylee and Nicholas saw three condors, Kessler and I one.

Re: Chucura

That'a great that you got to go back with both kids. Kessler is 11 already, wow! Seems like just a few years ago that you had your big adventure with the eruption on Ubinas!

Rest day??  Sucess!

Supposedly a rest day in Chivay after 3 nights on Mismi, but this seemed like a good idea as more acclimatisation for Hualca Hualca. Initially we headed for Huarancate but settled on Chucura when we saw the deep snow and remembered the concept of a rest day!

A fine day for a traverse  Sucess!

Before heading out, I had little information about the area and Nevado Chucura, but, despite its 1:100 000 scale, the Peruvian IGN topo map had served me well before. I asked around in Arequipa, and learned that it would be easy to climb, so I just went for it.

After climbing Nevado Huarancante, I made my way to Nevado Chucura over Pt 5310 and along the east ridge.
From the summit, I continued for a short while along the NW ridge to the next small outcrop, to verify that it was indeed lower. After that I hiked down to the road in Quebrada Chucura.
