"After the first glass, you see things as you wish they were. After the second, you see things as they are not. Finally, you see things as they really are, which is the most horrible thing in the world."

Road mileageMy truck's odometer had the FR 233/38 junction at just over 12 miles from highway NM-12. We drove two more miles to a wide spot in the road at elevation 8,660 feet (odometer: 14.0). I hiked it from here - it couldn't have been more than two miles, using the section markings on the map to help gauge the mileages. My guess is the total o/w mileage to the top is 16, +/- a little bit. The road looked good all the way up. Passenger vehicles could make it to the 233/38 junction. High clearance for the rest. Stock trucks and SUVs should be fine. The last few turns would need to be made very slowly. I liked the hike! The lookout man told me of the 1995 burn and showed me the still-evident scars, as well as the new growth coming in.
