On The Edge

On The Edge

When Bryan got to this part of the ridge on Angels Landing he said "Dude, I don't need this kind of stress" and then turned around. Photographed February 21, 2011

Gotta respect that.

It's always a personal decision, but I say, better safe than sorry. And when you don't feel comfortable, it's not safe, so returning is a wise decision in my book!

Re: Gotta respect that.

I agree completely. We all have to listen to our instincts. It's not safe to push yourself too far beyond your experience level. I respect Bryan's decision.

Totally agree!

And it's something that I struggle with to this day at times myself maybe not on the scale I used when I was younger but my spirit pushes me on even more now! Safety wins 99% of the time but I fight the battle inside!

Re: Totally agree!

It's an interesting struggle for sure. My first few years in the mountains I had about a 20 to 30 percent turn-around ratio. I was careful not to exceed my experience level. Now it's down to about 5 percent or less. I've learned that when I'm freaked out, if I take a break and calm down a little, I might be able to go a little farther.

Lots of respect ...

One final question about the route :

How far does the railing GO? Did "they" install railing going all the way up to the summit or highest point on the ridge ???

Re: Lots of respect ...

The chains do not go as far as the summit. In fact they are sort of sporadic. It seems like they tried to put chain in the narrowest and steepest most exposed sections but there are plenty of long stretches without any chain.

Been there

Great place, but not with snow. Good decision to abort. Knowing the trail, it looks like he had already stuck his neck out on slick footing for a fair distance.

Re: Wow!

Thanks Beau! Hey, are we gonna climb any mountains this year? I heard a rumor you turned into a farmer or something.

haha....

looks scary. I've done it without the ice so can imagine how uncomfortable that would be. Better safe than sorry...

Re: haha....

Yeah, this one freaked me out a bit. Hey, what exactly are you doing in China? I just got back from Europe yesterday myself. Since it was a family trip, I only did a few easy hikes.
