Nice photo

It looks strange to me to see so much ice and then have it stop so suddenly. The scoured nature of the exposed rocks makes it look like the glacier is retreating quickly or do all the uncovered slopes look like that in the area? Great to see some one my age so active in all these amazing places. Cheers, Harry Kettmann.

Re: Nice photo

If you read about it, and look at older photos, you do indeed see rapid retreat all over the place. In 1941, when the glacier from Pucaranra flowed directly into lake Palcacocha (4566m), a large chunk broke off, the lake overflowed and a massive flood killed 6000 people way downstream. The lake is being watched now, but with so little glacier left directly above it, I don't see it happening again.

My map of the area is dated 2005 but the small print reads that the glaciation on the map is based on satellite images from 2002. It shows the edge of glacier from Pucaranra above lake Pucacocha at around 4700m. Looking at the Google satellite view now, it's at 4800m.
