Roughly Handled  Sucess!

I thought I would squeeze in a hike after my flight to Denver and 4 hour drive to Grand Junction. I fairly pounded my knees by just the hike of this canyon. Tried to make a loop with a 4WD road but could not find the road - I may have not gone far enough down canyon. .

nice hike with mom, Duchess, and David, the best part was to go through lemon squeezer - exciting, scary, but fun.

Arrr...what a canyon!  Sucess!

Been through it many times...glad it wasn't during the latest rock fall, that fall pretty much destroyed a good section of trail!

Rough  Sucess!

May 21 2023

In the morning Shaylee, Kim, and I hiked Rough Canyon not far from our house. It was a nice hike on a nice day.

October 20 2019

Justin, Kimberly, and I canyoneered Shaylees Birthday Canyon and Not Shaylees Birthday Canyon. Both are short, but quite nice, especially if you combine them.

August 12 2019

Kessler and I headed for Shaylee's Birthday Canyon and Not Shaylee's Birthday Canyon for some canyoneering. We descended both canyons and had a good time. There was one pool in Not Shaylee's Birthday Canyon that we had to wade.

April 20 2019

Shaylee, Kimberly, and I headed for Rough Canyon and Shaylee's Birthday Canyon (named several years ago on Shaylee's birthday) since that is what Shaylee picked to do today.

The route through Rough Canyon was rougher than expected since there was a lot of water roaring down the canyon. We had never seen the canyon flowing. There was a lot of wading and the route took much longer than expected since we had to bypass a lot of obstacles that could have been done by hiking the streambed if the water wasn't flowing. We took about three times longer than expected to make it to Shaylee's Birthday Canyon and we were tired by the time we made it to the canyon.

We found the route to the head of the canyon and rappelled in. The slot was short, but better than I remembered and the downclimbs were nice.

After negotiating the slot, we walked back to Rough Canyon and hiked the jeep road back to the vehicle.

Shaylee wanted to spend her 9th birthday in Grand Junction. We went to places such as Bananas Fun Park (miniature golf, laser tag, etc.), birthday shopping, etc, but we also did some technical canyons so Shaylee would be able to name them on her birthday.

Several years ago (before Shaylee was even born), I had found some slot canyons around Grand Junction, but they were pretty short. There were a few hidden side canyons in the Rough Canyon Complex that looked promising and Shaylee, Kessler, Kimberly and I went to check them out.

The first canyon we completed was what Shaylee wanted to name Shaylee’s Birthday Canyon. It's well hidden an not obvious from anywhere in the main canyon. It was definitely technical and had a nice slot. It had some good downclimbing too. Shaylee named the first drop the lizard drop because there were lizards climbing the wall all over the place. We weren’t quite lizards, so we had to resort to rappelling to access the canyon.

The canyon soon slotted up and had a spring at the top, which made the slot slippery in places. We made our way downcanyon and through the slot, using a rope in some sections.

After Shaylee’s Birthday Canyon, we did another slot canyon and Shaylee named it Hippo Frog. There were some frogs in some of the pools and we enjoyed going through the canyon. It was a nice little slot, but too short.

After completing the slots, we walked back up Rough Canyon and left for some birthday shopping!

I've also been there several other times; all between 2001-2004 while living in Fruita.
