interestingI hadn't heard of this subspecies before. How does one identify it (other than range)?

Good to mention......that moose can be dangerous. One of my most frightening wildlife encounters was not with a grizzly but with a bull moose in the Wasatch a few years ago. It was rutting season, and the moose was lying down a few yards off the trail. As I passed, it snorted and started to get up. I decided an off-trail diversion with some trees between us would be better!
Once when I was in Montana, a guy a met told me about a guy getting trampled to death by a cow moose in the Beartooths. He said the most dangerous animal in the mountains is a mother moose around her calf. I think a grizzly sow around her cubs might be a little worse, but the point was taken.
