Sunset over the Cordillera Negra
Nice to look at, sure, but also a sign to get down quickly. I had been exploring Cerro Huancapeti, without much knowledge other than a 1:100000 map.
It had been an interesting day, but after reaching the central summit, I thought that the fastest way back to civilization would be to descent to the northwest, where I could see the main road in the distance. To cut a long story short, the descent was much harder than the easy route I had followed on my way up. Fortunately, as it turned out, I already had the hardest part behind me when the sun went down. However, it took so much longer that I ended up spending the night at 4600m, at the nearby mining plant, instead of at 3100m, in my bed in Huaraz ...
