The bottom piece is called a directional.

Thanks Marc, I was climbing with Michael Covington again, and it is amazing how different his style is compared to younger climbers... he feels so confident on long run outs, his gear placement - only 1-3 per pitch - but so solid... and he moves so fast... quiet an amazing climber...
