For anyone wishing to utilize the NW couloir, I would strongly recommend ascending this route and definately wear a helmet. Loose scree and rocks do fall down this couloir on a regular basis. I used my axe a couple times to lower myself over an occasional drop, so an axe would also be useful but not necessary. It's steep but not as bad as the pictures make it out to be.

The 'Red Couloir' is significantly more solid. Snow can last well into late July on the NW couloir.
