Wasilik Popler, Nantahala NF

Wasilik Popler, Nantahala NF

This tree was the 2nd largest Yellow Poplar in the US but is dead. The trunk was still standing in July 2006. (This picture was taken with an old friend. He was killed in a plane crash in April.)

Dead.

Not sure where that "second largest" legend started, but it was never on any official list, as it was a fused tree--at least two, possibly more poplars fused into a single trunk.

I never got around to seeing it--first time I had a chance it still had a strip of live bark and a couple of leaf-bearing branches. But soon after that it completely died. I keep hearing the Forest Service is going to take it down to keep it from falling on anyone.
