Outstanding day trip

Obviously didn't reach the summit, but the guided walk was extremely interesting. Beautiful blue-sky day with clear views into the sulfuric acid crater lake. Sulfur streaming off the beach created wild colors offshore. Definitely worth taking a detour to Whakatane for.

Epic

Very impressive area to visit, plenty of dramatic vistas and dynamic volcanic features. Can't think of too many similar places which are so accessible. Crater bottom largely obscured by gas but occasional glimpse of some fluid down there. Went via the ferry tour which was reasonably priced for the experience. Now NZ$199 but ran at 6 hours from start to finish with a couple of hours exploring/being herded on the island itself. Saw some dolphins on the way out and back, they seemed to enjoy riding the boat waves. There's a very nice $6 campsite just up the coast at Matata if you're looking for supercheap accommodation or there are some $20ish options in Whakatane at holiday parks etc.
