Fire Lookouts

Once there were over 8,000 fire lookouts dotting mountaintops across the United States. Today there are only a few hundred still in operation. I've visited ten in California including seven on the Sequoia National Forest (Needles, Jordan Peak, Mule Peak, Tobias Peak, Baker Point, Bald Mountain, and Buck Rock), two on the San Bernardino NF (Keller Peak, Strawberry Peak), and one in Marin County (Mt. Tamalpais). I also visited two lookouts in Wyoming (Kennaday Peak and Spruce Mountain). Please feel free to add photos of fire lookouts you have seen.

Good idea

for an album. These structures are special and deserving of appreciation and preservation.

Re: Good idea

Thanks and ditto. Also, those last lucky people who get to staff fire lookouts are among the most interesting and knowledgable people out there in the mountains, IMHO

awesome

I have spent a lot of time searching for old lookout tower sites in Southern California. I really love them. Thanks for the page.

RIP

Since this list was created, the Needles, Jordan, and Mule lookouts have been lost to fire - and the Buck Rock, Tobias, and Baker Point lookouts barely escaped destruction. I was lucky to have seen Jordan and Mule before their demise, and although I visited the Needles after its lookout was lost, the stairs were still a memorable experience.

Parents refers to a larger category under which an object falls. For example, theAconcagua mountain page has the 'Aconcagua Group' and the 'Seven Summits' asparents and is a parent itself to many routes, photos, and Trip Reports.
