The road to the trail head is pretty intense. A two wheel drive can handle it but it is very slow going. I needed new suspension and a total break job once I made it off the mountain (1990 Volvo Station Wagon). This set me back 1,300 bucks. Also got a flat tire on the way down, as did the guy who came down behind us! Beware the road.
Advice: Start summit day early! There were massive thunderheads forming directly over the peak by 11AM. Huge lightening area in the summer time. By 12 the entire ridge was off-limits.
There is no piped water in this area, though I did notice a small lake just below the research station.
Excellent views of the Sierras, with the midpoint of the vantage being Mt. Tom.
