Tremper Mountain

Overview

Tremper Mountain, located in the Eastern Catskill Mountains near the hamlet of Phoenicia, is one of the last fire tower summits in the park. At 2720ft it is not the highest point of the region, but does have a good view from the 47' fire tower that was in operation from 1917-1970. The nearby Burroughs Range is clearly visible from the tower, also views of Hunter and Plateau Mtns. The area was repeatedly burned over and is dominated by decidous trees such as maple and oak. This mountain is included in the Fire Tower Challenge by the Adirondack Mountain Club.

Getting There

There are two different trails that ascend the mountain, detailed descriptions and directions to the trailheads can be found HERE

Red Tape

Always sign-in at the trailheads. Be cautious around rock piles, rattlesnakes are indigenous to this area. Note: The firetower cab was locked upon our arrival, it may be staffed and open to the public some weekends in the summer, but views are still available from the top of the stairs.

Camping

There are 2 lean-tos, one about 3/4 of the way up the Phonecia trail, and another below the fire tower at the summit.
