Wildalphorn is a secondary summit on the main ridge of Dürrnbachhorn and is located east of Dürrnbachhorn main summit. It is located, too, east of the main trails of Dürrnbachhorn ridge and thus receives much less visitors than the western neighbour.
Wildalphorn can be summited throughout the Dürrnbachhorn traverse on the northern routes. A visit from the south is possible, too, starting at Heutal trailhead or at Winklmoosalm trailhead via Dürrnbacheck and Dürrnbachhorn main summit or via Gimplingsattel.
See the Dürrnbachhorn main page for the approach.
Routes to Dürrnbachhorn and its secondary summits:
South routes:
Heutal trailhead – Gimplingsattel – Dürrnbachhorn main ridge. Leave there the main trail to the right, climb over a fence and follow the narrow trail (short bushwacking through dwarf pine thickets) to the east till you reach the not very prominent summit.
Winklmoos trailhead – Gimplingsattel and go on as described above or alternatively:
Winklmoosalm – Dürrnbacheck – Dürrnbachhorn – summit.
North routes:
Normally done as a full traverse: Wildalphorn is located between Dürrnbachhorn main summit to the west and Kreuzschneid subsummit to the northeast.
Ski routes:
From Dürrnbachhorn along the south side of the connecting ridge, descent via Gimplingsattel and back to Winklmoosalm
From Heutal using the Wildalm ski runs to Gimplingsattel, south slope and west ridge to the summit
See the Dürrnbachhorn main page for area restrictions and for accommodation.
Wildalphorn is a hiking summit throughout late spring, summer and autumn.
Wildalphorn is a ski and snow shoe summit, too. Main trailhead for a winter ascent is Heutal. This ski tour can be combined with the ski route to Dürrnbachhorn. Both winter outings need good snow condition as there are many dwarf pines around the summit zones and the south slopes.
You need full ski tour gear and your avalanche gear. See the Tirol avalanche bulletin here.
